Currently reading/playing:
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas; Exit West: A Novel by Moshin Hamid.
Also test-driving Nora Roberts' first attempt at apocalyptic fiction, Year One. Not bad, but "magickal faeries"?
Don't play games except board games with a few friends.
Favorite books:
I love books with strong and even difficult themes such as A Little Life, or If This Is A Man... I'm always surprised when people say "Oh, I don't want to read that book, it'll make me too sad". Sad is good, emotion is good, a great book should shake you up somehow.
At the other end of the spectrum, anything written by Augusten Bourroughs is a delicacy. Same for David Sedaris.
I prefer novels to nonfiction, but there are many many exceptions; Oliver Sachs, for example. I love biographies and memoirs. And I devour the occasional cookbook (reading Ottolenghi is almost as good as eating at Ottolenghi).
With a few exceptions, I avoid the YA genre, and have a hard time with Science Fiction, although I loved Greg Bear's Darwin's Radio. Maybe I just need some good suggestions. I'm not a fan of "galactic empire" stuff, that's for sure.
Above all, I avoid the Romance genre like a poxy petticoat.
About me:
From Philadelphia. Living in Paris since 1978. Known to my friends as The Book Thief, for obvious reasons.
