TL;DR: I need quotes (preferably by Elizabeth I, contemporaries, or someone before. Maybe Machiavelli?) about the roles and responsibilities of monarchs and rulers.
No idea if this will attract ANY help but I am desperate! I'm writing a capstone paper about Hamlet and how his character is redeemed by Lawrence Olivier's adaptation in his Hamlet by entirely eliminating Fortinbras from the play. In my mind, by eliminating outside threats, Olivier (obviously in love with Hamlet; I mean he played the ultimate narcissism card of directing himself in the role!) is attempting to redeem the character's disgusting disregard for national security and the safety of his people and country. What I need (and am hoping you can provide) is quotes from early sources Shakespeare may have been familiar with to define what he and contemporaries would believe the role of monarchy was.
Any/all help would be greatly appreciated and if I can provide internet favors in return (within reason; no nudity or illegal activity!) I'd be happy to do so! I rock at research, given time, and am getting my degree in English. Or help because I'm a struggling/near tears senior!
Unrelated note: why am I asking this here? Because I don't belong on any forums, am 4 hours from my due date, and must submit this for publication when I turn it in to my professor! I figured I might as well exhaust all resources as I edit the rest of my paper. I've got the bare bones - first five pages - written and just need that little bit more to make it better!
