Hey guys!
I've been lurking on Mobilism for a while now (I have it to thank for many great reading experiences
). I wanted to share my project with you because I thought it might be interesting, particularly for the ebook crowd. It's called a•part•ment: a separated place. It's an indie game about a breakup with a major focus on using text in interesting ways. The game revolves around a breakup that has just occurred, but also dives into the stories of the neighbors who live in the same apartment complex as the former couple. They all have their own relationship problems and we explore each of their stories through interactive vignettes.
a•part•ment is closer to an interactive story with gameplay mechanics than it is to a traditional video game. For example, one of the characters is a novelist and we put you in her shoes. You're literally typing her novel and dealing with the distractions and interruptions she has to deal with. Each neighbor has 2 or 3 interactive vignettes and each vignette's presentation and mechanics are tailored to their stories.
I love books and reading, but I rarely love reading in games. We really wanted to use text and take advantage of its strengths. A lot of these characters are pretty undefined as far as physical traits are concerned. We're hoping that will let people shape these characters in a way that makes their stories more personal for each player.
We wanted to make something that appeals to adults – gamers and non-gamers alike – and offers something different and interesting. The game is about more complex, intimate emotions that you don't typically see in computer games.
Yes, we've had a number of grown men and women cry while playing a•part•ment. We wear it like a badge of honor.
We have a free demo up on our website here: http://apartmentga.me/demo/
And are currently Kickstarting here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rtgray/apartment-a-separated-place/
We also have a some really cool Let's Play videos Youtubers have made, if playing isn't so much your cup of tea but you're curious. Here's one of the shorter videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tTkn2KBj5A
I'll be lurking if you have any questions or want to discuss anything that happens to catch your interest.
