Armor by John Steakley (1987) (This is one of two publication of this author) this is the best. Many says that its like the Starship Troopers but I say that is just the military structure. But the story is a hell of ride.

Solo? One title that I always remember is : ICARUS HUNT by Timothy Zahn.
Quote from Amazon review: .."The Icarus Hunt"'s main character is Jordan McKell, a star-freighter pilot who plays the role of a poor yet honest private contracter, considering that in reality he is a smuggler working for a huge crime organization. Things couldn't get worse he supposed. Or so he thought."..
Full action..that's what I remember from about 2 years ago..

Despite the writer's personal views, I have always enjoyed Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I normally read the novel twice a year.

I don't tend to have permanent favourites but I recently read The Uninvited by Dorothy Macardle (My lecturer petitioned it back into print) and I really enjoyed it as a classic ghost story!
