Two brothers ,Adam & Bert, share a hectare of land on which to grow their crops/food plants.

Because of arguments in the past they each plant one of their plants alternately in each row so it looks like:

abababababababababababababababababababab
abababababababababababababababababababab
abababababababababababababababababababab
abababababababababababababababababababab

They change each year so that the next year the planting is:

babababababababababababababababababababa
babababababababababababababababababababa
babababababababababababababababababababa
babababababababababababababababababababa

They do not have different types of plants in the same row and in fact they buy a big packet of each type of seed and split it between them.

The plants receive the same amount of water and fertilizer and again the water and fertilizer are identical.

each plant receives the same amount of weeding and care and there is no sabotage by either brother or anyone else.

every year Bert has a better yield/result than his brother Adam and Ruth Van Waerebeek always buys her vegetables from Bert when she is in the area.

Why does Bert has a better yield/result than his brother Adam ?

5WRZ$ deducted per question.

OK. Before Zacharie is going to spoil all your WRZ$ with useless questions (or is it the answers that aren't very clear?) we're gonna keep the reward for this one to 200 WRZ$, independent of the number of questions posted. Sherlockx will decide who the reward goes to. Please work together on this: any question may lead to a hint or idea that can help solve this riddle.

Nice riddle, Sherlockx, once more. Added to your list here: viewtopic.php?p=648078#648078
(Mind to PM me which ones aren't solved yet? We might eventually post the name(s) there from those who solved your riddles... - G)

Haha! you asked for it... here my first questions:
sherlockx wrote:Two brothers ,Adam & Bert,

Question 1: Does it matter what name they have? Could they have been named William and Ernest, for example? Would this riddle still stand?
Question 2: You speak of two brothers. Would this riddle still stand if this were a brother ans sister, or two sisters?

(We have to start somewhere, haven't we?)

no the names do not matter the riddle would still stand

Question 2: You speak of two brothers. Would this riddle still stand if this were a brother ans sister, or two sisters?
the riddle would still stand no matter what the sex or relationship or even no relationship.

Oh and whilst I remember the puzzle after this one is called "I've been through the desert on a horse with no name"

sorry carelessness on my part each year they plant identical numbers of crops

Now corrected by editing the message as well as correcting the Lyric in the song by America

It has just occurred to me that if I think up enough of these I could send them off to a publisher.

So folks with your questions also suggest a title for a book of these puzzles

Just thought it could be useful to post here Sherlockx first reply to this question...

Maybe it's not important. Maybe this is important: tell us, does the place on earth where the brothers 'share a hectare of land ' have any importance?

If you mean the geographic location then no
And as a free giveaway it is neither within the Arctic circle nor the Antarctic circle .
It is on this planet as well.

Questions:

  1. Do Adam & Bert know themselves why Bert has a better yield/result than his brother Adam each year?

  2. Does (Sun)light has something to do with the yield/result (and I don't mean the soap)?

  3. If they didn't alternate, would Bert still have a better yield/result than his brother Adam each year?

  4. Do the brothers need belt(s) for their cultivation machines and do they know there exist long lasting belts? If yes, do they know why some belts last longer even though they are exactly the same speaking of density, thickness, colour, shape, age, profile, surface, weight, etc... Just a setting on the machines that produce them is different?

# Do Adam & Bert know themselves why Bert has a better yield/result than his brother Adam each year?
Yes

Does (Sun)light has something to do with the yield/result (and I don't mean the soap)?
No & No and Bert does not sing the Beatle's song Good days sunshine to his plants

If they didn't alternate, would Bert still have a better yield/result than his brother Adam each year?
Yes

Do the brothers need belt(s) for their cultivation machines
They use spades, forks and trowels but they do need belts to hold their trousers up

do they know why some belts last longer
Oh yes before they retired they owned and ran belt up inc and it's a belter inc, Bert ran the company that made the longer lasting belts

By coincidence my next question goes about 'they listen' but my question was based on your first reply with simply 'No'. So, my question is: when you say 'they do sometimes listen' then who or what do you mean with 'they'? The farmers or the plants? In other words, does Bert play music for his plants? (And yes, that is technically possible ;) )

- edit - Ouch! You answered that one partially when talking about the 'Beatle's song Good days sunshine'. So, before you're gonna say I turn in circles again, time to make a summary... ;)
