"changing" memory...
I'll have to remember that one...

It used to take me only a page or two to remember if I had read a book before.
Now it takes a chapter (or two)

on another subject, off books, my son's friend recently referred to Jeter as Mr December - for the Yankees after the Stanton trade

I don't really get baseball, but I read Play for a Kingdom by Thomas Dyja and that was pretty good. It's about a game between soldiers during the US Civil War around the time of the battle of Spotsylvania.
I prefer Ice Hockey but we don't get much of that in the UK and my team closed down a few years ago and watching it on the TV seems pointless. Football I can follow on TV, but Ice Hockey I can just see guys flying around.

Welcome aboard.
Thanks for the tip on "Play for a Kingdom". Unfortunately, there isn't a copy available here, so I'll have to track one down.
Maybe PJ has it in his extensive collection ;)

I wasn't a big fan of Ice Hockey on TV in the old days either. I went to many games, and it's great in person... but it was always tough for me (and the camera man for that matter) to follow the puck. However, now with HD TV, it's much easier, and now I watch. It also doesn't hurt the my Blackhawks have won 3 championships lately ;)

When you say Football, I will assume you mean soccer since you seem to be from the UK.
I watch some soccer, but it kind of sucks in the US. We couldn't even make the World Cup. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

John, my brother and I used to play 'electric football' back in the early 1960s. I confess that I thought this kind of game had disappeared long ago!

It's been staging a HUGE comeback.

The World Championship was held in Dallas in 2017

Here's another old sports game, John.

I was reminded of it, because my sister-in-law sent me a picture of my brother playing a game yesterday with one of his childhood friends. The weather was much too cold to walk out back into the woods, to the family's new tree house.

My brother is on the right, and the last time I saw the guy on the left was more than 50 years ago!

Now that brings back memories. We played dice baseball when we were young (I don't remember which rules version we used)
But as we got a little older, we switched to APBA and Strat-O-Matic baseball. We had APBA baseball leagues in college and one of the leagues lasted around 20 years ;)

John, this is a board game that I faintly remember from my childhood, although I don't think my family ever owned it. I probably saw it at a friend's house. To my surprise (like the other games you've mentioned), I found that it's still active, to some degree, 76 years after it was invented!

"'All Star Baseball' is one of the two most popular baseball board games of the last sixty years, and has been honored as one of the fifty most influential American board games of all time.It was manufactured by Cadaco-Ellis and designed by baseball player Ethan Allen. The game first appeared in 1941 and a special version is still sold today. It was the best-selling baseball board game of all time, and is the only such game to have been distributed through mass market channels and toy stores for any extended period of time. The annual versions of the game were discontinued in the mid-1990s due to the loss of market share to video games and greatly increased player licensing costs, but a commemorative version was issued in 2003. Unlike more simulation-focused competitors, most notably Strat-o-Matic Baseball, ASB is aimed at a younger audience and is simpler to play. The initial target audience was boys 9–12 years old. It simulates batters' performance well, but makes no attempt to model the performance of individual pitchers. Nevertheless, many fans passionately bought each year's cards and collected statistics from neighborhood leagues, some amassing as many as 2,500 games worth of paper box scores and comparing those totals with the actual players' statistics."

I remember that one as well. Played it for a a year or so when I was probably 8 or so.
We used to keep "score" and tabulated our stats at the end of the season so we could award MVP's and set league records.
In the winter time, we had to keep ourselves amused. ;)

Yeah... we had a table top hockey game as well. Neither of the brands you show...
But I think it was this one.

It was worth HOURS and HOURS of fun during the long cold winters. :D
