Is anyone here using the Nokia N95? Looks like a nice ppc phone but would like some opinions :)

Has some nice features (eg. inbuilt GPS and maps, 5megapixel camera, sliding keypad, great mp3 player, nice and small) but havn't heard much about how functional it is... Can check it out at http://www.nokia.com

N95 is a "Symbian" phone with a Series 60 3rd generation os and is not a ppc. completely different os's.

Both pda class and both capable of 3rd party installs but a ppc has a touchscreen and is in my opinion superior.

A smartphone and a symbian are closer in comparison.

Yep, I agree with BosZMaN, it is different thing, different platform.
Though I'm using windows mobile device, I'd also like to have N95 as my symbian phone.
With S60 3rd edition platform, it has more choices of great softwares compared to S80 or S90.
As a symbian phone, N95 is more handy compared to E90 Communicator (which have same platform - S60 3rd edition).
Not to mention cheaper one. :D

It does not have GPS, it does have some sort of navigation though, how it works I dont know. You have to pay a monthly subscription to your operator to use the sat nave. It crashed and freezes all the time. Feels flimzy. battery is crap. Has many features, but it was rushed to th market. My dad got this phne and I got the 02 orbit XDA. My phone is great. My dad however whishes he had mine ;)

The N95 is a brilliant phone. It is a phone first and foremost.

And yes, it does have full GPS functionality - however, the software doesnt work the way you think - you can use full GPS functionality, but no navigation - this is something you have to pay for. Otherwise it can do full location based services and track your location on maps - which are free to download.

The latest firmware (which is easy to do) makes the phone very fast, gives it the AGPS feature (lookups via the net - to speedup location locks) and it runs nice and smooth.

Plus the camera is ace, and you can plug the thing into your tv and view your files - any kind. Good to make presentations with if you want.

And one of the most important features ALL modern mp3-playing phones should have - a 3.5mm socket.

Before anyone jumps down my throat - im not a Nokia fanboy, I also own a XDA Exec, and a Sony P990i.

I used to have the XDA Orbit - even upgraded it to WM6. Was still too bloody slow to use. I want full functionality AND the ability to make calls and send texts - quickly. N95 so far is the best phone I've had. Period.

My next phone will be a PPC - but one with a VGA screen, bloody fast processor (no TI OMAP 200) with accelerated graphics, oh, and I have to be able to put it into my pocket - any suggestions?

i have had the N95 for 4 months and so far the only problems are the battery life 2-3days with not much use and the GPS fix which takes along time. apart from that its proberly the best phone ive ever had and ever seen. it DOES have GPS and it works the same way as a satnav ( i guess). but voice guidence doesnt come standard with it, which it doesnt really need but its a nice to have. the camera is good but has the normal phone camera problems ie slow shutter. anymore questions?

I have the n95 8Gb and its pretty cool. My only complaint is that uBook can't run on it and yeah, the battery life's a pain. But I miss my O2. My kid accidentally sat on the LCD waaahhhhh and now I have to get used to this new phone and there isn't a site like ppc warez for it! argggggghhhhhhh.... other than that, its a great phone :) Now if only someone would crack skyscape for the symbian, then 'd be happy indeed.

You should look on ebay for a screen all things considered there pretty easy to fix and not to expensive.
http://www.gsmhosting.com or http://www.noeman.org/gsm both have ppc and symbian software just not very well organized.

Yes I have used tomtom with my N95-3 but latest release needs an external bluetooth GPS the next version is supposed to include support for the N95. My friends with N95-3 as well use Garmin it uses the internal GPS, I have yet to get it. Hopefully I will be able to get it to work.

The -3 is the black and silver us model ( http://www.nokiausa.com/A4546019 ) with the bigger battery and a couple of other internal enhancements. -1 being the original UK model. -2 being the 8G model.

Tomtom does not work with the N95 internal GPS. There is a plan for the new version of tomtom 2 work with N95. Garmin does but neither is on this site because they are symbian not windows mobile systems. I mentioned 2 good sites above for symbian software.
