Just wanted to welcome everyone that got so efficiently kicked out and banned from that other board. I would like to welcome you and tell you about a few of this sites rules:

Anarchy is not welcome: Follow the rules and the MODs won't come down on you...too hard. Really, the MODs here are a great bunch of ladies and gentlemen (ass kissing is welcome) and really willing to help. I mean, they got a complete idiot (myself) to act and behave in a mostly civilized manner. If they can do that WITH ME, imagine what they can do FOR YOU.

Learn to use the SEARCH engine on the site. It's like the one they use at google, you input a couple of keywords and out the results come. It's better if you use the complete name or tittle of what you're looking for, or the complete name of the developer/author.

It's very important that you understand that it's preferable to use Private messages to request new links and to say thank you or just to chat. Posting thank you notes on the threads is viewed as spam around here. That's what they have the "Thank You" button for. USE IT!

If you have a request, use the request thread and make sure that you did a search of the site, by title, or developer/author name. Otherwise some smart alec will post a link to whatever it is you're looking for and say "It was already posted here, NOOB!" or something like that. Not that it ever happened to me, no siree Bob.

If you're posting nekkid pics of yourself, they ask that you to load them up HERE ( http://images.mobilism.org/index.php ) and then post the link to the thread. That also works wonderfully if you're uploading the cover to a book or a capture of a software release. And if you click on the little "preferences" drop menu tab, you can resize your pic at the same time. I use a 300 pixel setting. 250 when I post two or more books or nekkid pics of myself. Using just the "Height" measurement keeps the aspect ratio of your pic as well.

Out of ideas and I gotta run.

mobiles24.com They had a self hosted ebook section that got shut down today. So every ebook on the site got nuked. I told a few of my "friends" about this site and how cool it is. No lie. Well, just a little itty bit.

Their excuse is.....wait for it!.........Copyright! LOL!
Can someone answer this?: Scenario 1: I buy a book from the bookshop. I read it and because its good, I give it to Zackdog to read. He also likes it and passes it on to his girlfriend, who didn't like it. She gives it to a charity shop, who then sells it for a tenth of it's cover price. The new owner reads it and passes it on to a friend, and on and on........ Now. Surely the copyright has been infringed or has it?

How is that different from what is happening in the cyber bookshop? I buy an ebook, I pass it to Zackdog, etc, etc.........

Just for the record, I helped a friend publish a book. It sold for $15.00. The publisher got $ 6.50, the printer $7.00. The author $2.50!!! (*edit* the promoter got $1.00 - in this case it was me) So it seems that the author is not the one bitching most of the time, but someone acting under his/her name because THEY are the ones "losing" money!

Anyway, on another note, why do they charge the same (or almost) for a hardcover and an ebook?

The copyright infringement occurs when you COPY your original and give it away. The things clearly state that "This book may not be reproduced by any means, mechanical or electronic without the author's prior consent" or something like that.

On the other hand, the US Copyright office, couldn't say where the rights of the owner of the physical copy end and the rights of the intellectual owner start. More or less. So, who owns what? The office left it to common sense and what use is it being put to.

Not commercial, in 95% of our cases.

Oh yeah, and unless you name is Stephen King (or something like it) most writers get it up the tail pipe from the publishers and printers. Then they have to cut in their agent (10-15 of the GROSS) taxes, etc. etc. After covering expenses and fees, most authors end up making a couple of pennies on the dollar.

And Beukies, you math is off. Adds up like government math to me.

Actually I got 10%, which I think is prety standard, so I suspect Beukies your friend only got $1.50.
At the moment the publishers are coining it in on ebooks but I think that will change as a number of governments are looking at the situation(probably to see if they can tax it) :(

Hell yeah! Less slices of the same pie for the publisher's. No wonder some authors come in here and say "please, free copy away"

What's next? Me, Myself, Ego, Id and I got our little conspiracy theory group together and came up with the following scenario:

The big TV, movie, publishing houses and the big printing houses will "merge" even further, becoming one or two giants, therefore holding everyone hostage. Since you're the producer, the distributor, the publisher and the printer (and you get it both ways) you can now FORCE the sales of printed books by only making the ebook available as a COMPANION to the hard copy. You buy your book, you get a code printed in your receipt, you go to the website to download the self-erasing upon copying ebook, which will be legal at that time on all electronic media.

Oh yeah, TVs and DVRs and all media players will be encrypted, so that they can play, but not transmit or transfer any data to any other storage medium, thus killing the pirated TV. They will also figure out a way to make CAM recording of movies impossible to do.

In the US at least, and we all know where most of the pirated stuff comes from, right?

Correct, China. :D 8)

Hi all,

@ zackdog, I love the thread title. I knew it was from the M24 fallout immediately. As a former member of the nuked section you mentioned I found this site a few weeks before it closed. I could see that there was becoming major issues from certain posts on there. I asked a mod and they said the main reason was that the files got uploaded/attached to the site/forum. I called into question the apps/games section and his response was "they use links to filesharing websites" So I wonder if it will be sorted out, but with the upload facility removed so people do exactly what's done here, just post a link? All my posts have been deleted, even those that contained just chatter on other sections of M24 and every time the topic of e-book comes up it gets locked then deleted? Wonder why? This site is great btw :) Great work by you all :)
