I use Calibre for Windows to convert books to any format or to take away DRM.

Calibre is a freeware and you can download it from here http://calibre-ebook.com/download Calibre is very easy to use, but to be able to convert DRM protected books you will need to install some plugins to your Calibre (http://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/2012 ... or-ebooks/). Just follow instructions http://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/2012 ... ebook-drm/ or watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSLP46sNejM

Upon reading the Apprentice Alf FAQs, it appears that only the original Amazon purchaser can use the calibre tools to remove the DRM from azw formats. Is this correct? If so, is there an alternative method?

Yes, purchaser has the key code - you will find it in you USERS FOLDER/MY DOCUMENTS/MY KINDLE CONTENT. The key (ex: B00ATDYCQQ_EBOK.azw) will be in that folder as either azw or prc files. That is what you use to undrm the book using Calibre. Kindle Fire books downloaded directly to your Kindle cannot be undrm'd as yet. A way around this is to install Kindle for the PC and download your books into that directory The books will show up with names and cover in the tab called Archive, put your mouse on it and select DOWNLOAD and that will install the book in MY KIndle Content Folder as the KEY CODE. Hope that helps - if you need help with Calibre let me know.
