I have this problem when i do a hard-reset:
First i use ppcpimbackup to backup all the info(calls, constacts and sms)
Then hard-reset
Then restore ppcpimbackup and i got my contacts doubled.
And in calendar, for example my birthdays appear repetead, sometimes 8 or 9 times in the same day???
Anyone with a solution?

are you restore from backup too

when restoring, it asks for an option on weather to replace, delete older and restore new, or keep both

And the doublets can be a result of an ActiveSync syncronisation too.
