I guess that he was made an offer that he couldn't refuse. Thanks for the memories.

Tony Soprano: I gotta be honest with you. I'm not getting any satisfaction from my work either.
Dr. Jennifer Melfi: Why?
Tony Soprano: Well, because of RICO.
Dr. Jennifer Melfi: Is he your brother?
Tony Soprano: No. The RICO statutes? [Racketeer Influenced Criminal Organizations]
Dr. Jennifer Melfi: Oh.
[chuckles]
Dr. Jennifer Melfi: Of course, right.

-------------------------------------------
Tony Soprano: What the fuck's with you?
Carlo Gervasi: Root canal, they got me on oxycodone. My whole fuckin' head is numb.
Tony Soprano: Well, that answers some questions.

The greatest actor of the greatest television series ever made (though The Wire is equally good). How sad for one to die so young. However, Chris did say that the way he's eating he'll be dead before he's 50.

Do you know how I found out !!!!?... my dear wee MOTHER chose to tell me while I was DRIVING !!! (and people that know me, KNOW my driving isn't that ...flash!!) DRIVING in a populated AREA!!!... she says .."Tony Soprano!!... Have you heard!!!?"... no, I says.... "DEAD!!!! D-E-A-D!!!!!...DEAD!!!" ...yes, people she had to shout it, and then she had to SPELL IT !!!!!... and she had a certain ...shall we say...ENTHUSIASM in her news!!!... it's any wonder I didn't drive off the road and mow down several startled pedestrians, I was so ... shocked!

♥ Jimmy was one of my Mostest-Bestest, favorite actors, and will be sorely missed, R.I.P. gorgeous man!!!!...

I'm curious- is there such an outpouring of grief over his death because people were so attached to the show, him as an actor or actually liked his character? I can understand being attached to the show, especially given how long it was on air. As an actor he was great, but let's be honest there are far better actors in films. And as a character, I understand that mob movies want you to sympathize with the main character and hate yourself for liking him, but still, as a person Tony Soprano certainly had some redeemable qualities but was still an awful human being.

I think that it's a combination of all three things. And if you think that there's something wrong with us sympathizing with the psychopath bad guy, (even if there was some humanity somewhere in there) I can only say 50 Shades of Grey to you. How did that monstrous thing become such a phenomenon? Human nature, that's why.

I actually read 50 Shades of Grey, and while I think analyzing that garbage is laughable, I don't remember anything particularly morally reprehensible or illegal done in that book. Everything in 50 Shades of Grey is between two consenting adults, and nobody gets murdered/beaten/life & family ruined/etc. The comparison is ridiculous.

Either you misread my statement or I did not express my point correctly. I wasn't comparing the book to the series, I was trying to draw an analogy between people identifying with the bad guy and the reason the book became such a hit: Human nature. It is in our nature to respond -much to our dismay- to people and/or characters who are or seem to be in control. We surrender ourselves to and admire the strong. And if the strong appeal to our basest needs, the need to dominate, the need to conquer, the need to amass power and prestige regardless of the circumstances under which these things were acquired, well, that's human nature.

Let's face that for many of us, the more violent and dehumanizing the fantasy, the more we like it.

Now, who wants to play a nice violent, racist, dehumanizing, denigrating, sexist, psychotic video game?

Edit: PS. Fantasy is why we tell and listen to stories, read and write books, compose music, go to the movies, write and act in plays, etc. Fantasy. Is what's for dinner.
