I received a mail this morning from Rapidshare terminating my account for "illegal downloads"! This is a new premium account so I am losing most of my money. Is this normal? If so, why do posters upload apps if the accounts are closed when the apps are downloaded? Very confused. Has anyone else had this mail?

Never had any email like this. Be sure to carefuly check the sender and analize mail's header.
Although watch out for phishing. I've got a few mails from people trying to scam me and get my login details. Check with RS official support.
As far as I know they shouldn't terminate your account for illegal downloads, maybe for illegal data stored on your account, otherwise they would loose a shitload of money... :P

This is surely fake one. Last time I got one email like this from megaupload. Hacker will use fake email address, send you an email saying your account is terminated and you will not be able to log in again.
Last time I emailed Megaupload and they recover my password and send back to my old email address. You should write to Rapidshare and notice them abt this.
For all ppl out there that has account, pls be careful downloading programs come with patches and crack. I really suspect my recent IDM update is the one.

That's raised alarm bells! I recently D/L'd IDM and it was infected with a trojan. Guess I'll get hold of R/S. Cheers

The other way that your Rapidshare Premium account can get stolen is through Rapidshare password phishing sites that are set up to look just like Rapidshare. These sites are easy to set up using a PHP script that has been written for this purpose (I have a copy of it saved so I know what it does). Any free web hosting site that supports PHP can be used for these phishing sites. I am a moderator on another forum, and I have gotten very good in spotting these phishing sites before the other users have a chance to get caught up in the scam.

I had my RS premium account stolen by someone because as a newbie, I fell victim to one of these phishing sites. I didn't realize at the time, that Rapidshare doesn't ask for your password again once you have logged into your premium account. Being naive, I entered my login & password and that's all they needed to steal my account. First they looted the 14,000 points I had on it (10,000 points has a cash value of $3.00). Then they changed the password so that I couldn't access it. Subsequently, it was used for illegal file storage (child porn). I was notified by Rapidshare that my account was terminated because of this and I had no recourse. This was before Rapidshare instituted the account protection feature that prevents your account from being changed without the security code that RS emails you when you activate the feature.

It's funny, because of this, that was the reason why I became a moderator on another forum, and I was determined that I would do my best in protecting the users from these scammers. It's a daily battle, because they keep trying and trying.

The only way to prevent these scammers from stealing your info is to have a vigilant moderator and admin force to catch these guys early. PPCWarez seems to have an interesting way to post topics by having to post a particular way.... or else!

Because of URL spoofing, we (on the other forum I belong to) also prohibited all live links (no URL tags). This way everyone knows where their destination is. Everyone has to use code tags. We also prohibited all redirect and so-called link protector sites which are primarily used to steer you to malicious sites. We instituted the HIDE tag which eliminated the need to use link protectors or redirectors to conceal your links from searchbots and non-members.

The best defense (besides the admins & mods) is YOU when it comes to protecting yourself against scams.

There was a thing on demonoid webpage that people have been saying that you need to update your IDM to watch the movies you just downloaded from there and demonoid posted saying that this is a trojan and do not download it.

If by IDM you mean Internet Download Manager, then yes, I agree with you. I have seen many hackers using IDM as well as WinRAR 3.80 and others to hide the Adware/trojan Virtuamonde, which seems to be the latest threat. They'll inject the installation software with Virtuamonde so you won't even know it's there unless you have your AV and SW software up to date. Virtuamonde and Vundo seem to be running hand in hand because many times the Vundo trojan is used to inject Virtuamonde onto a system.

Just spoke to the Help Desk at R/S and they agreed that I had been the victim of a phishing attack. My account password had been changed on Saturday and the mail I received from R/S was a fake. Password and account is being re-set so nothing lost.
