I have now been informed: "This file has been removed for violation of our Terms and Conditions" LOL! A first for me! Some company named Muso.com complained about one of my uploads and the file host promptly removed it.

Are we going to have difficulty in sharing books in future? Or is this just a one in a million chance they found 1 book for an author or publisher that has signed with them?

That's a shame, I've just removed two of my own files! I uploaded yesterday and they weren't posted and no pm, so I checked the first one I double posted whoops sorry will double check next time, the second was a collection I think it wasn't presented properly? not sure so I've reposted individually (after double checking), I don't know if this was the right thing to do??!! I hope to lose my'L' plates eventually!

He is not talking about it being removed HERE. He's talking about a company that represents authors and runs around searching for their books being posted for free. When they find one, they send a little nastygram to the file hosting site (filesonic, megaupload, etc) threatening them with legal action if they don't remove the file. MUSO is a very agressive one on this matter.

Sorry misunderstood, I had one file removed on 4shared recently too by complaint, they moved it to an abuse folder, not sure if should expect further action on that?

Beukies, you're gonna have to get used to it :( , it's just a fact of life in the ebook sharing world.
So far you've just been very lucky.
With some authors/books you can put up another mirror and it may last a while.
But other authors, such as the dreaded "not allowed" authors, are very aggressive in having links taken down.
They also have companies (they hire) and sycophants who aid them in this.

And ... there are some authors who are pretty cool about it too. Check out this thread where the author popped in to say hi.

That is true! I will start using other hosts as well, in case they start checking ALL my u/l's. The reason I like to register on a site is that I can see how many downloads a file has had. That give me a very clear indication whether my posts are acceptable or not. For instance, one of the book series I have posted here has had 7,208 downloads already!

I've just started numbering my files to be uploaded to avoid this I don't want to lose anymore, I've also started using multi-upload too, I was worried they'd delete files upload while not logged in (yep, done that one and realised after several files - not paying attention again!)

>_< Some authors really don't get that this is more helpful to their career than hurtful. Unless thier books suck, then yeah, it's going to hurt. But hey, what can we do.

Aaaaagh! They (Muso) are onto me! Looks like they are now going out of their way to have my files deleted. One after the other. I will have to avoid Mediafire from now on. Or maybe I should encrypt the files and supply the password to members here?

The blame for them finding the files can't really be placed on the upload sites. It's not the uploader sites where they find these.

They do a search engine search (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.), and the POSTS here show up in those searches.

Then they come HERE, get the link info and then go threaten the upload sites with legal action if they don't remove them. The uploader sites have nothing to do with them finding the files at all.

Even if you did encrypt the files and supply the password to members here, they would just do the same thing. They could care less whether it is encrypted or not. As long as they can get the filename, they will still be able to get them deleted.

Darn! I didn't think they would crawl around here or any of the other book forums! (I am so naive! :? ) I still think it's silly, because a lot of people are getting to know new authors and you can be sure they are buying the books because of that.

Oh well. We'll just have to see.

Well, a lot of it really depends on the particular authors (and I would suppose the publishers also) attitudes, intentions, and decisions (as Bohica and womble have pointed out.)
There are things you can do, and the forum could do, that slow down your links getting killed, but no way I know of to stop it - short of going to one on one sharing or torrents.
This is where the term "not allowed author(s) came from.
These are the people who most aggressively pursue the taking down of links and excetera.
I have done everything short of password protecting my links or completely renaming the files to nonsense, and some still get nuked.
I put up a mirror for an anthology with Kim H arrison's name in it, it lasted about 1 day.
Then I put up 2 mirrors, Multiupload and Mirrorcreator, they lasted maybe 2 days. And it wasn't just individual links that were nuked, the whole mirror sets were pulled.
Womble posted a Keri A rthur book, I warned her not to expect that link to last.
What saves Mobilism, at times, is the fact that we aren't heavy on "erotic" fiction here, IE m/m erotica and so forth. Some of those authors feel very strongly about folks not sharing their books.
Someone once told me that the ironic thing was that some of these same books were poorly written, hmmm...
On the flip side, sometimes it's the authors themselves who put a book out to be shared.
I think when a lot of people "discover" a new author this way it may benefit everyone.
I believe Bohica is right, google is the biggest help to folks looking for links.

In another forum I know of, the forum software automatically changes a "not allowed" authors name into a different term.
Do I think that would work with us here? No, I don't
The same thing that might prevent a release from showing up on a google search, also would prevent it from showing up on a forum search (which would cause big problems.)
If you had to be registered to see the links, people will register to be able to do so...
If an author feels that strongly, maybe their work shouldn't be posted.
I'm sure it'll show up in a torrent, or a friend's library, anyway...
I would refrain from sharing someone's work if they asked me personally, but as of yet it hasn't happened.
It has happened to others though, just ask womble.

You can put files in a generically named RAR, inside 2 generically named folders inside the RAR, include a misc. picture to change the file size, upload it to file hosts without an account, and use sites that create mirrors, but things will still happen... even if Mobilism made the links invisible to non-logged in people, scrambled the author's name, and made users request access to the section, things will still be deleted...

 Hey hmorphone & beukies & all,
Do you ever feel like a mouse on a wheel? Running around & changing links? Just a thought! I think as hmorphone & Bohica60 mentioned you can mirror & camouflage all you like, they'll find the links, maybe using the 'not allowed author' idea of shortening the name might work e.r Nancy Gideon -Nnc Gideon or N Gideon? It might slow them down a bit, but I do like the idea of uploading without an account idea 8) , I know changing the name of the folders you upload doesn't help, mine are all numbered now, this can get confusing tho' if you don't pay attention
