"Religion and the Rise of Capitalism" by R. H. Tawney, an account of the interplay between religion and economics, and the changes in religion over the centuries that made it possible for Capitalism to develop. I got pointed at it by Robert Heilbroiner, in a Further Reading section of his "The Worldly Philosophers", an account of the history of economic thought , using the loves of Adam Smith, Parson Malthus, Davis Ricardo, Karl Marx, Thorstein Veblen, John Maynard Keynes, Jospeh Schumper and others to illustrate the development. (See also Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism for a more focused take on the terrain Tawney explores.)
