For some reason my HD has decided to use the compact keyboard and will not let me change this.

I have tried restarting the phone doing a soft reset, but i can't change the keyb

I suggest you back up your data and do a hard reset. Same thing happened on my touch pro and once i did a hard reset, the problem was fixed

Tell me one thing, how can i save my contacts, and the stuff saved at my 8Gb mmc, like gps ndrive will be ok when i finish the hr ?

You can check the registry entry with a registry editor, SKTools has one. I don't know which parameter you should search for it but it should do the trick.
