My letter to my local member, adapted from @Disk4Mat's example:
As your constituent, I know you have acted and will continue to act as my voice in Parliament. Given the gravity of the situation, and the deep concerns I have, I feel it is my moral obligation to write to you.
The Russian atrocities in Ukraine appear to be just the beginning, and I am outraged that more is not being done to aid a nation fighting for their lives and freedom. We talk the talk about how Australia stands against injustice and with its allies, but sanctions alone will not stop the tyrant now that he’s committed to conquest.
What I am hearing right now is that they need more air support. Russian rockets are causing mass destruction and that the situation is becoming dire. The Ukrainians have lost air superiority and need missile defense capabilities. We are in a position to help with this.
I call upon you Andrew, as my voice in Parliament, to stand up for our Ukrainian friends - they are looking to the West for help and we must support them in this fight.
personal bit you might like to omit: I spent a month in Kyiv in October 2014 - in the course of my APS work - in the aftermath of the downing of MH17. Kyiv is a beautiful city, and Ukraine has an incredibly long and frequently terrible history, and the people there made us - a random influx of Australians - so welcome. I fell in love with the place, it's true.
According to the UN, as of 3 March 2022 more than a million Ukrainians have fled the country. It has been just a week of Putin’s bloody war. There will be much more. I ask you to appeal to DFAT/Home Affairs to expedite a visa process for Ukrainians wishing to come to Australia. I also ask you to propose the sending of planes to Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia to evacuate refugees that Australia, a country of migrants, would be ready to accept. It is the least that we can do.
