Overview: This electrifying and edgy novel opens on a remote beach on the outskirts of Hong Kong. A family, in the midst of its own tensions and emotional crises, wakes on the morning of a family-bonding camping trip to see a group of young women clustered on the beach. Hungry-looking and scarcely dressed, they seem to be waiting for transport. Young Sarah, known as Xixi, speaks to the girls and takes a picture of beautiful Mary, to whom she feels a connection. Back at home, Xixi posts the photo on Facebook and begins an online narrative over which she has no control and becomes an unwitting and persecuted victim. Meanwhile, parents Jacob and Leah are distracted by their marital disintegration, the vitriol coming from their second daughter Rachel who has run away to school in Leah’s native Canada, and the looming new SARS epidemic that is sweeping through Hong Kong.
As the atmosphere in Hong Kong becomes more paranoid, and foreigners and the wealthy are evacuating in droves, Xixi, who suffers from seizures and memory loss related to epilepsy, becomes obsessed with finding Mary and saving her from her doomed circumstances. Xixi strikes out into the underworld of the city, and strangers begin to threaten the family, in ways that are both subtle and overt. Terrified, Jacob takes Xixi to Thailand, where they are questioned by police and the online world explodes, targeting Jacob and Xixi with their censure.
