Overview: "The Heartvine" (Rukōshinsō, 1939) is one of the stories collected in the short anthology "In Light of Shadows". It was Kyōka's last story, completed shortly before his death. It takes place at a Buddhist temple on Mount Utatsu in Kanazawa, across the Asano River from the neighborhood where he spent his childhood and youth. In this strongly autobiographical attempt to sum up his life as an artist, he nostalgically recounts the most unstable period of his life, when as a young man he considered suicide but was saved by the intervention of a young woman who did, in fact, kill herself on that same night. Struggling mightily to finish this final statement, Kyõka was able to leave behind a quiet yet powerful testament of beauty, eros, and death.
