Overview: James Ramsey Ullman (1907 - 1971) was an American writer and mountaineer. He was born in New York. He was not a high end climber, but his writing made him an honorary member of that circle. Some of his writing is noted for being "nationalistic," e.g., The White Tower.
The books he wrote were mostly about mountaineering.
Genre: Fiction > General Fiction/Classics Adventure

The White Tower (1945) (ed. Jerry eBooks 2021)
Ullman gathers together a number of characters struggling with their role (or lack of role) in the war, and sets his main character, Ordway, to collect them all together in an attempt to conquer an unclimbed peak (the Weissturm or White Tower). Since the group includes an Austrian who fled from her Nazi husband, an Englishman who failed repeatedly on Everest & who was unable to force himself to join in the war, a Frenchman who deserted & retreated with all his wordly goods, a confirmed Nazi on leave, an American who crashed his plane nearby (Ordway himself) and a local Swiss guide trying to do what he can while his country remains neutral, the dynamics are quite interesting & Ullman does a good job while not caving in to stereotypes too much.
River of the Sun (1951) (ed. Jerry eBooks 2019)
Here is another superb novel which blends excitement and adventure with intellectual stimulation. Like the unforgettable The White Tower, it develops a philosophy of living against a background of hazardous experience.
On the physical plane, River of the Sun tells the story of Mark Allison, ex-Army pilot, who, for intimate reasons, plunged into the green hell of the Amazon valley. This expedition developed unexpectedly into a breath-taking search for Dr. Nils Barna, a scientist who had disappeared in the enveloping wilderness. As the story mounts in tension to a tingling climax, there is a palpable evocation of the jungles, the nameless rivers, the mood and effect of unknown and exotic places, and man’s magnificent struggle against nature and himself.
But River of the Sun is more than mere surface excitement. For in his quest of inner peace, Mark Allison discovered that even amid the volcanic eruptions of this twentieth century there are still horizons beyond which lies the stuff that dreams are made on.
Banner in the Sky (1954)
A timeless outdoor adventure story, winner of a Newbery Honor.
Josef Matt, the only man to ever try to conquer this last summit of the Alps, met his end in the pursuit. Now his son, Rudi, dares to complete the same task in memory of his father. Setting off with his father's red shirt, Rudi must courageously pass through the same chasm that took his father's life and finish the challenging climb in order to plant the shirt at the peak.
The author's own mountaineering adventures bring to life the struggles of sixteen-year-old Rudi to overcome his family's objections and conquer the summit that killed his father.
