The Edges of Things by Lewis Shiner
Requirements: .PDF reader, 7 mb
Overview: The stories in this book range from horror to science fiction to fantasy to suspense, and elsewhere Shiner’s published mainstream and western fiction. That variety makes him a hard writer to peg down, which is fine with him. He doesn’t want to be pegged down.
Shiner cares about every element of his craft, about the way he presents his passions, and that care shows in the finished stories. It also shows in the work he did for this collection. Shiner didn’t have to revise the stories here, but he did. He was willing to show these early works, but he wanted them as clean, as bright, and as sharp as possible.
Sharpness is another trait of a Shiner story, the sharpness of a razor that can cut you without you noticing until the blood starts to flow. Even his comedies, like "Stompin’ at the Savoy," have their sharp angles. Shiner’s works are chockablock with moments when you suddenly find yourself staring straight at things you’d just as soon not see, or at the sharp edges of things you’ve seen head-on a thousand times before. Like the shame of Anne in "Blood Relations" at her thoughts about her retarded brother, Denny. Or the cruelty of children in Billy Trujillo’s flashback in “Brujo.”
Genre: Fiction > General Fiction/Classics
