The raison d’etre: a foreign ministers’ conference called to deal with a crisis that may precipitate a nuclear war.

These are fateful and anxious hours, yet not too full of anxiety to shut out love. So Clarabelle Fulton comforts her husband in his time of greatest trial; Anne Hawkes copes serenely with the problems of her unsettled life; and Lady Cynthia Grimsby transgresses the bounds of her bitter marriage to find a passionate happiness elsewhere. There are other colorful characters—General Gahagan, brilliant and dangerous; Mike Anker, who would jeopardize peace for an exclusive story; Veronica Templeton, blithe meddler in the power game; and Tom Brace of the American delegation, whose indiscretions almost prove disastrous.

Only one as familiar as Marquis Childs with the human encounter of diplomacy could write so intimate a novel of life at the brink, where a few men try desperately to agree on alternatives to war. The Peacemakers is urbane and compassionate and wise.
