01 The Orphan Cub
In 219 BC the war clouds gather as Hannibal sacks the Spanish city of Saguntum. Rome, egocentric, belligerent and bent on supremacy of the Mediterranean lands, cites provocation and thus war with it‘s old enemy, Carthage in what is known to history as the second Punic war.
As the two superpowers collide; Spain, Gaul and finally Italy itself become battlegrounds as Hannibal spreads slaughter, fire and sword.
Into this war of giants steps Baldor Targa of Carthage. Falsely accused and In fear of retribution, pursued and finally trapped in Numidia, Baldor fights for his life against the brother of the man he has slain. Realising he will always be a hunted man he enlists in Hannibal's army as a mercenary warrior.
Suffering a baptism of fire in Spain, he then marches through Gaul and across the Alps, fighting Gallic tribes as well as snow and ice; emerging onto the northern plains of Italy to confront the legions of Consul Publius Scipio and his son Cornelius and where fate will take a twist that affects all their lives.
02 In Hannibal's Shadow
Midwinter 218 BC the ‘Lion’s Cubs’ are loose in the ‘She Wolf’s’ den.Hannibal and the Carthaginian army, victorious from the battle of Ticinus seek further combat with the Romans. Publius Scipio and his Legions, shocked at their defeat, have fallen back and encamped beside the River Trebbia, awaiting reinforcement by his Co-Consul, Tiberius Sempronius Longus and his army.Baldor, newly promoted and on a recruiting mission amongst the Gallic tribes, becomes embroiled in a murderous skirmish and blood feud between the Cenomani and Lingone Gauls. Meanwhile, Hannibal begins baiting his trap and setting an ambush by the Trebbia using the intemperate, impulsive character of Tiberius to lure the Legions to battle. Baldor fights at the Trebbia amidst freezing temperatures and hailstorms, the Romans losing thousands, he losing more comrades while once again encountering his nemesis, Cornelius Scipio.In Carthage, Baldor’s powerful enemy continues to seek his demise, issuing a new warrant for his arrest. Hidden within a Gallic unit, safe from Carthaginian authorities and his enemy’s spleen, he’s given command of a raiding force tasked with destruction of the Cenomani fortress, Victumulae.As battle turns to blood feud, he must use weapon skills and his wits if he’s to survive and be victorious.
03 The Brood at Trasimene
Midsummer 217 BC and the ‘She Wolf’s’ den is aflame. Having destroyed the Roman legions at the Trebbia River, Hannibal leads his men south seeking battle with the new Consuls elect, Gaius Flaminius and Gnaeus Servilius Geminus. Having outmaneuvred Flaminius the Carthaginians devastate the Etruria plain and slaughter the populace in an attempt to bring him to battle. Flaminius, though enraged at the despoliation and killing is cautious of Carthaginian trickery and remains impotent within the city of Arretium. However, as Hannibal turns towards the southeast and fertile Apulia, Flaminius finally mobilises his legions and begins the chase, Hannibal leading him on towards Lake Trasimene. Baldor Targa, now promoted to Captain by Hannibal, is beset with troubles as an old enemy and a powerful new one appear within his own ranks and add murder and robbery to his woes. Meanwhile, he and the Roman Centurion, Cornelius Scipio are destined to meet again on the field of battle as the Gods continue their perverse game of cat and mouse between the pair. Battle, blood feud, vengeance and foolish pride combine to test both Baldor and Cornelius’s resolve as they play their part in this war of giants
04 Blood Harvest At Cannae
Autumn 217 BC
Losing the war against Hannibal, the desperate Roman senate appoint a Dictator, Fabius to command their legions.
A wily Hannibal uses Fabius’s avoidance of pitched battle to trick him then succeeds in tempting his second in command to fight and ambushes him not far from Geronium where a savage battle ensues.
Captain Baldor Targa, having fought bravely at Ager Falernus and Geronium now seeks his woman, Lasairiona and the men who abducted her and robbed him. The trail leads him and his comrades, Andulas and Armaco back into Roman territory and to a new enemy. Meanwhile, an old enemy becomes an ally, while yet another plots his death.
Summer 216 BC
Resting over winter and spring, Rome raises more legions under two new Consuls. With a huge army, they follow Hannibal seeking the right ground to bring him to battle in a bid to end the war.
Baldor’s nemesis Cornelius Scipio, whilst suffering horror at Geronium and frustration at his nation’s recurring defeats receives good news from home and a promotion to Tribune.
Against this background of savage war: friendship, love, hate and feud will play out whilst both nations approach battle on the plain of Cannae.
