Iron Blood & Sacrifice Series (#1-3) by Eifion Wyn Williams
Requirements: ePUB reader 2.6mb
Overview: I am a 62-year-old Welshman, brought-up in Snowdonia by a family of teachers, historians and poets. My father, one of 11 children was the headmaster of my infant and junior school.
My blind Taid (Grandfather) was an orator and story-teller of note, and I recall vividly our huge family squashed into the front parlour in Nain and Taid’s 2-up, 2-down terraced house on Madoc Street, Porthmadoc. The whole family would be there listening to one of his historical tales, told with an elder-teacher’s love of his language in a deep and musical baritone I can hear to this day. He was inspired to verbosity, perhaps by his blindness but you could see he enjoyed it and so did all his listeners. Always dressed in a pin-stripe three-piece suit, Taid would stand by the mantelpiece, puff his pipe and talk for hours whilst my brother and I would be on the floor in one corner, completely entranced. He spoke of God-like, truly ancient warriors like Beli Mawr, even great Arthwr Fawr and a huge, terrifying giant called Yspaddaden Pencawr, who lived not far away and actually ate naughty children!
This then was the foundation to my historical and cultural education, which is of course a never-ending process. I have been writing creatively for over forty years and these truly ancient, largely untold stories have been simmering inside me for as long as I can remember.
Genre: Historical Fiction

01 The Sons of Beli Mawr
Unashamedly weighty, this iron-age saga brings to life some of Wales’ oldest and most revered heroes, those of Mabinogion fame. Lludd Llaw Ereint, Nynniaw, Rianaw, Caswallawn Fawr and Llefelys all walk again in this ground-breaking and entertaining trilogy. Never before have the invasions of Julius Caesar been told in this modern and contemporary way and from the Brythons’ perspective. Iron Blood & Sacrifice is a bloody romp through the palisaded hillforts of an ancient Britain when its five Kingdoms were riven by treachery and division, and the eternal, ever-burning fire of ambition within their leaders was all-consuming. Head-hunters, shadow stalkers and all manner of wild and ungovernable tribes occupy ‘Prydein’ in this almost primal era, but they are forced by their priesthood to put aside past differences and to come together as one for the first time to face a new enemy. It is no ordinary enemy arriving at their southern shores, as Caesar’s marching machine of tyranny has vanquished every force put in front of it, and the disparate tribes of Prydein must achieve a rare and never-before achieved unity to face this killer of Kings and his unstoppable army.
02 The Sacking of Bidog
Britain in 54 BC, is a mysterious land clinging to the edge of the known world, and the Roman General Gaius Julius Caesar; the scourge of the Gauls is on the point of his second invasion. This foreign General and his monstrous army which threaten their southern coast, although beaten on their first incursion the previous year will return in much greater numbers this summer, and the 'werrin' of Prydein fear the worst. Their country is ruled by five great Kings in this Brythonic period of pre-discovery, and its rich, ancient and vibrant culture is under threat from the conquerors of all.
Prince Cadwy is the son of one of those Kings, and battle-proven in last year's defence of Britain, he has settled into his new lands of Bidog with his equally new and pregnant wife at his side. With the picturesque and busy market town of Draenwen at the heart of his new territories, this celebrated Albion Tywysog seems to have everything a man could want in life, but all that is about to change. The call to the northern Kingdoms for assistance from King Caswallawn of the Southern Brythons hasn’t materialised this year, as in his arrogance and his infinite hubris that southern King has declared that his own warriors are enough to deal with Caesar on his return. So, with no further duties in the far south in regard to Roman aggression for Cadwy, this northern aristocrat’s future seems assured, as the crops are established, Draenwen is booming and beautiful Bidog is flourishing in the early spring warmth. However, storm-clouds are gathering to the north and they look black and vengeful. If the young Prince had any foresight at all, he would take a last, lingering look at beautiful Draenwen in this spring sunshine, as in just a few days it will be almost unrecognisable.
03 Return of the Yellow Dog
With the Roman General; Gaius Julius Caesar on the verge of launching his second and much larger invasion of Prydein, the country he is about to invade is riven by politics and a failing religion.
Untimely death dances hand-in-hand with the murderous, Brythonic kind of power politics which grips the country from the threatened south coast to the most northern. The all-inclusive and Druid-led unity they had achieved the previous year and to so much success was now a forgotten and unachievable goal, as Caswallawn the King of the Southern Brythons has decreed a ‘northern exclusion’, infuriating the three northern Federations which had sacrificed so much in the previous war. King Caswallawn gets what he asked for, as in the face of complete annihilation, he must now face the all-conquering Romans alone, becoming far more isolated and beleaguered than he bargained for. The Roman war erupting once more across the southern states is not the only conflict which threatens Prydein this summer, as an all-out civil war erupts across midland Breged and the country begins to burn.
