Knight of Rome (03-06)by Malcolm Davies
Requirements: ePUBreader, 5.1mb
Overview: I was born in Plymouth Devon, England where the "Mayflower Steps", a short flight of stone stairs leading down to the water can still be seen. It was down these the Pilgrim fathers walked to take ship for America. All the time I have been writing - one act stage plays, radio plays and magazine articles before turning my hand to full length novels.
I now live in a village in Western France where the biggest event in the last twelve years has been the robbery of the local Tabac.
Genre: Historical Fiction

Knight of Rome Part III
The God Janus has two faces. He stands looking forward at what is to come with one face and with the other contemplates what has already been. He stands at the point where past becomes future. He is the God of meetings and partings, crossroads, fords and bridges. Imperial Prefect Otto Longius, Son of Badurad of the Suevi and Knight of Rome, falls under the influence of Janus as unlooked for news drags him back into a world he thought he had left forever, then forward, reunited with old friends to carry out the Emperor’s will.
Knight of Rome Part IV
Imperial Prefect and Knight of Rome Otto Longius, the “Kingkiller”, lounged on a sofa in the shade of his villa overlooking his sunlit estate outside Luca. He was happy to be at home with his wife, Lollia, his family and household after his exertions on behalf of the Emperor in Spain. His friend and companion on the recent mission, Prefect of Engineers Lucius Taurius Longius, “Boxer” was now stationed in the city which added to his general sense of well-being since they often spent time with each other.
In Rome, Emperor Augustus Caesar was far from content. He sometimes thought he was little more than a juggler but instead of knives or batons, armies, ambitious men, ambassadors, provinces, the senate, finance and the grain supply whirled through his hands day and night. Drop one and the result would be disastrous for Rome. And, to make everything worse, a new difficulty arose as soon as one was resolved and old conflicts broke out again like incurable ulcers. A potentially dangerous situation had developed which must be swiftly dealt with so his mind turned on those able men at his command who he could trust to act on his behalf.
Knight of Rome Part V
Three legions march into the Teutoburg Forest of Upper Germania only to be annihilated by a force of fearsome warriors led by Herman of the Cherusci tribe. The Roman world is shaken by the defeat and the prestige of Rome is diminished in the eyes of all the conquered peoples of the empire. The ageing Augustus Caesar is devastated by the loss and needs to find some way of limiting the damage. Sending more legions to the troubled region is not the answer. Plots against Roman authority are suspected everywhere The rule of law is challenged. Political attacks on Augustus, holding him personally responsible for the disaster, will soon emerge. He must find some way of stamping out the rumours running wildfire.
Advised by his private secretary and head of intelligence, Menities, he turns yet again to Military Prefect and Knight of Rome, Otto Longius, the Kingkiller. From Britannia through Gaul, and into Germania accompanied by his old friend Legate Lucius Longius, “Boxer” as he is known to all, Otto struggles using guile and deadly force to support his emperor in a time of great peril.
“Otto and Boxer are my lucky dice” Augustus had often said. Can it be a winning throw once more?
Knight of Rome Part VI
With the death of Augustus Caesar, Emperor and First Man of Rome, the city is thrown into ferment.
No man of position can be sure who is a friend and who an enemy in the treacherous hothouse of Roman politics. New alliances must be formed, old ones cemented or discarded. Secrets bubble to the surface. Previous actions and decisions may be re-examined to see if they were truly taken in the “greater interests of the state.” Will they appear to be honourable or justifiable in the new light which may be shone on them? The heads of the great families are looking to secure their long-term futures and reviewing their past. Certain facts must be suppressed and certain inconvenient people removed.
No taking his place in the massed ranks of the legions, no barbarian hordes rushing on him, but Otto Longius, Knight of Rome and former Military Prefect, finds himself facing the deadliest peril of his entire life.
