Overview: For most people who know of it, but don’t actually live here, Cornwall is likely just another English county. They’ll know of Cornwall as a region of beautiful Mediterranean-like sandy beaches; quaint seaside fishing villages; sun-bronzed surfers; the dramatic locations for popular TV series such as Wycliffe, Poldark, and Doc Martin, and, of course, they will probably know about our delicious Cornish cream teas too! However, leaving aside for now the contentious idea that Cornwall is in any way English, there’s also a lesser known, more mysterious, unworldly, darker side to Cornwall, of which they may not be aware. For those who are prepared to look though, Cornwall does have an abundance of strange tales about Mermaids; Knockers; Piskies; Spriggans; Giants; Owl Men; wizards; sea monsters; Bucca; moorland beasts and hounds; big cats; phantom trains, planes, automobiles, ships and bicycles; UFOs; all manner of ghosts, and other ‘head-scratchers’ (Jim Harold’s term) of all kinds too! I hope you will enjoy exploring some of the odd stories that were contributed to me for this series of three books, with me going on ahead as your guide, holding a Cornish Davy miner’s safety lamp aloft, lighting up our narrow gorse and heather enclosed tracks, across the high, misty Cornish moors; and hopefully seeing any Spriggans before they see us! No other region of Britain packs such a diverse range of mysteries, history, legends, creativity and folklore in to such a small area. Paranormally, and creatively speaking, Cornwall has always punched well above her weight, perhaps that has something to do with the abundant presence of granite here. Cornwall’s anomalous activities are distinctive to her independent national identity, traditions, customs, superstitions and culture.
