01 Debt of Dishonor
In Rome, 216 BC, Fulvius is a murderer, a thief, and condemned to die. Saved by the catastrophic defeat of the Roman Army at the hands of the Carthaginian General Hannibal at nearby Cannae, he’s forced into the legion and an altogether unfamiliar world of soldierly duty and honor. Realizing promotion as the unexpected reward for paralyzing fear, Fulvius finds the Army not so dissimilar to the shadowy Roman underworld he knows so well and schemes to make the experience worth his while. He betrays, and is in turn betrayed, in a whirlwind cycle of threat, violence, and criminality leading to an ultimate showdown and reckoning that could undermine the entire war effort. Hannibal is no doubt coming, but that may be the least of Rome's troubles.
02 A Pirate's Life
In 214 BC, fresh from their mutiny in Gaul, Fulvius and his misfit legionaries escape to new lives along the pirate infested coast of Illyria. Taking up the local trade, they stumble upon a way of life much more to their liking than the endless marching and intolerable discipline of the legion. They also find a people worth defending. Scheming to make the most of their new circumstances, Fulvius and his men work to enrich not only themselves but also the lives of the villagers who took them in. Yet the wider politics of the region begin to threaten everything. A chance encounter thrusts them onto center stage of the coming war between Macedonia and Rome, with Illyria--and Fulvius--caught in the middle. While a shadowy Roman hand guides the orchestrated chaos, Fulvius and the others find themselves in a personal war with an old adversary; one who seeks to snuff out all they've created in Illyria ... for the glory of Rome, of course. Tragedy follows miscalculation and Fulvius will be forced to dig deep within himself, calling upon every ounce of deceit and treachery at his command just to survive the conflagration. Rome is coming for Illyria. And Fulvius now stands squarely in its way.
