Intimate Evil: A Novel (1989)
This new novel by the author of the critically acclaimed The Best Man focuses on seventeen-year-old Jason McGuire, who is on death row for the murders of his father and brother. When his case automatically comes up for appeal, attorney Bryan Delafield decides to defend him on a pro bono basis. But Jason refuses to assist in his own defense, insisting that he killed because “he felt like it.” Something about his obstinate client causes Bryan to believe that there is more to this story, and a cryptic phone call from Jason’s very troubled mother only adds to the attorney’s suspicions . . .
Determined to discover why Jason was driven to such brutal murder, Bryan becomes near-obsessed with the case—and with Jason. He drifts away from his family and conservative lifestyle—finding that Jason has begun to fill a void in himself that he never realized existed, evoking emotions he never imagined. The terrifying truth behind Jason’s crimes only brings Bryan closer to him, and to the realization that the boy’s former life represents the other side of his attorney, Bryan Delafield.
Intimate Evil draws the reader into the psychic depths of men who are different, yet intimately alike—one a murderer, the other a lawyer who holds his life in his hands.

The City Kid (2001)
A third novel by Bay Area writer Paul Reidinger, whose first novel, The Best Man, was named one of the best novels of 1986 by the American Library Association. In THE CITY KID, he presents Guy Griffith - gay, 40, and less than satisfied with the current state of his life. He comes to San Francisco like many before him - as a refugee from some intimacy gone disastrously wrong in the huge nation east of the bay. When he meets sixteen-year-old Doug Whitmore on a ridge overlooking a nude beach, he surrenders with pleasure to the boy's radiant adolescent energy. Guy doesn't yet understand how deeply rooted Doug's hurts and confusions are, nor how dangerous they might come to be, and he is not entirely willing to admit, even to himself, how susceptible he is to the fugitive attraction that he and Doug both feel.

The Best Man (1986)
Paul Reidinger makes a notable debut in this novel of three friends in their twenties--he, she and he--who find themselves caught up in a design for living that breathes the spirit of the 1980s. David and Katherine meet as freshmen at Stanford, and soon are best friends. In the ordinary course of events, they would become lovers. But there's a hitch--he's gay. Adjusting to this with surprising aplomb, they go on as best friends, and after graduation move to San Francisco to share an apartment, and to look for a right man for each of them. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to the other, each finds the same Mr. Right in the person of Ross, a third-year student at Stanford Law School. What follows is a comedy of the new manners that manages to be funny and credible, and an unconventional love story that manages to be credible and very touching.
