Coronation Close series (#1,3) by Lizzie Lane
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 1.9 MB
Overview: It's exciting to see a new series launched and becoming successful. It was doubly so for the Coronation Close series which begins in 1936 - the year of the coronation that never was, King Edward the Eighth preferring to abdicate and marry his American twice divorced sweetheart. An added surprise was being invited by BBC Television to speak of my memories of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953, and this following on from the coronation that afternoon of King Charles the Third.
Not that the series is about royalty. It's about working class people moving into houses with indoor bathrooms during the thirties. Friendships are made but the residents of Coronation Close have many stories to tell and secrets to keep.
I can't help being fascinated by early twentieth century history, after all I was born a few years after the end of the Second World War. I heard all the stories of hardship and fear from my mother who never, ever watched a war film on account that she'd lived through the real thing - two world wars in fact!
Genre: Fiction > General Fiction/Classics Historical

New Neighbors for Coronation Close (#1)
Bristol 1936
Jenny Crawford has resigned herself to a loveless marriage living hand to mouth with their two children. Like many others, husband Roy struggles to find work at the docks but a chance encounter turns the family's fortunes around.
Not only does he get regular work but they are also allocated a council house on Coronation Close on the outskirts of the city. Jenny and the children are overjoyed, this is the fresh start she could only ever dream of.
But trouble feels never too far away. With Roy spending more time with Sir Oswald Molsey bullying black shirts, Jenny is left to her own devices and eager to fit in begins to make new friends.
Thankful of peace, Jenny has her head turned firstly by an old love and then by her knight in shining armour.
Does she allow herself to glimpse a chance of happiness?
Whatever happens the consequences could be dire if Roy ever finds out.
Dark Shadows over Coronation Close (#3)
There’s talk of war and dark clouds fester on the horizon...
Bristol 1938
A shadowy presence overshadows Coronation Close, watching and waiting. Jenny Crawford is the first to notice the stranger and wonders why his attention is fixed on Thelma Dawson’s house. When challenged he makes a hasty retreat.
Meanwhile Thelma is having trouble with her precocious daughter Mary who is about to leave school and start work. Mary considers herself an adult but to Thelma she’s still a little girl; an attitude resented by her daughter.
Unknown to her mother, Mary is secretly befriended by a stranger, an older man who treats her as the grown up she thinks she is. But what does this man want with this naïve young girl?
Problems shared are problems halved. Jenny and Thelma certainly share theirs as the shadow of war rolls over from Europe and nothing seems certain.
