Overview: One of the most beloved heroes of the stage, Cyrano de Bergerac is a magnificent wit who, despite his many gifts, feels that no woman can ever love him because of his enormous nose. He adores the beautiful Roxanne but, lacking courage, decides instead to help the tongue-tied but winsome Christian woo the fair lady by providing him with flowery sentiments and soulful poetry. Roxanne is smitten—but is it Christian she loves or Cyrano?

A triumph from the moment of its 1897 premiere, Cyrano de Bergerac has become one of the most frequently produced plays in the world.

Translated with an introduction and notes by Carol Clark (Penguin edition, 2006)

Carol Clark is an Emeritus Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. She taught French there for many years, lecturing particularly on seventeenth and nineteenth-century topics. She has previously translated Baudelaire and Proust for Penguin.

Translated by Brian Hooker (1923)

Brian Hooker’s brilliant 1923 blank-verse translation of the classic swashbuckling romantic French play by Edmond Rostand.

Translated and adapted by Anthony Burgess (1985)

Anthony Burgess' energetically witty translation of this well-loved nineteenth-century French classic about the swordsman-poet with the nose too large to be taken seriously. This translation was first acclaimed in the 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company production with Derek Jacobi as Cyrano. Six years later Burgess provided the subtitles for the hit film version with Gerard Depardieu. Anthony Burgess was the author of over fifty books, among them the novel The Clockwork Orange, as well as stage plays, screenplays and translations.
