World History: Ancient Civilizations by McDougal Littel
Requirements: PDF Reader, 140.5 MB
Overview: This is an excellent text for middle school. It covers what it needs to cover in short, easy-to-read sections. How the geography of each location affected the history and culture of the civilization is presented. There are enough maps and timelines that the reader gets a really good idea of the “where” and “when” of things. Colorful drawings and photos make an attractive layout and added stories for interest make this an engaging text. Each chapter begins with a story, each section in the chapter ends with questions over the reading for review, and each chapter ends with a section of review questions. In addition, there are numerous suggestions for enrichment activities throughout. An additional plus is that it’s fairly lightweight, although it includes a large map section, reference section, and additional “practice of skills” section. Many high school textbooks have become huge tomes that the students never really get through, but are forced to lug around all year. I really enjoyed using McDougal Littell texts and was really sad when they merged with other publishers, as the texts were never the same quality (in my opinion) after that. The text does NOT include the Inca, Aztec, Ghana or Songhai empires as those empires came about after the period covered by this text...
Genre: Non-Fiction, History
