A Concise Grammar for English Language Teachers by Tony Penston
Requirements: .PDF reader, 4.2 MB
Overview: This attractive and thorough book was originally titled A Grammar Course for TEFL Certificate, but the author changed its title to reach a wider readership. The name change was a wise move in my opinion, for this book has features that could have easily been ignored by many teachers who should find it immensely useful.

One of the elements to appreciate is the Teaching Notes. You will not regret reading them as Penston imparts wisdom not only on grammar but also on teaching methods and differences between language learners. --TESL Ontario Contact, Spring 2008

Although aimed at trainee English language teachers it [A Concise Grammar for English Language Teachers] will also prove to be an invaluable reference tool for practicing teachers, teaching assistants and students. The user-friendly layout and content may also appeal to ELT trainers. Each chapter provides succinct definitions, clear timelines, and relevant extracts from popular EFL textbooks. Relevant tasks, comprehensive tables and teaching notes are included within the chapters.

A key for the tasks is included at the back and a good index makes the material easy to locate for lesson planning and general reference. In the appendix there is a basic level guideline covering beginner to advanced levels, which highlights the grammatical content and a few communicative functions of some popular EFL course books.

... as well as concise definitions and explanations, the book contains much teacher-friendly material in the way of visual aids (diagrams, charts, time lines), tables, inductive tasks, teaching tips and coursebook extracts which show how the language is taught in context. The tabulated information is particularly impressive, including a complete table of tenses and uses. The tasks assist the teacher in moving away from form towards an understanding of function, though some tasks attempt to cover too much ground at once - for example the modals matching task which covers thirty-five uses of modals in one exercise.

The book is both concise and clearly laid out, ideal for the teacher who requires a quick reference and some useful teaching tips.
