Overview: SO LONG, AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH
There’s no better way to say it so here goes: this is the last issue of GAX. There are several reasons behind the magazine closure: sluggish sales, drop in advertising, online game sites, higher printing costs. To put simply, our expenditure costs is far more than what we get in revenue, and this is simply unsustainable in the long term. Hence, management has decided to close the magazine.
That doesn’t mean the spirit of GAX will be gone for good. As you may know, many of our current writers also write for HWM Malaysia, and the magazine will soon feature a new section focused on games, and it will also be called GAX. So if you ever need your fix of local game news and reviews, please pick up a copy of HWM Malaysia. It’s a really great comprehensive tech magazine, and I hope that you will continue to follow GAX in HWM Malaysia in years to come.
As for me, I won’t be joining my esteemed colleagues. A few months ago, I had made a decision to leave the company to pursue other opportunities. But I had not anticipated news of the magazine’s closure, which I only received a couple months ago. It feels like a bittersweet ending to leave at the same time as the magazine’s last issue. I’m grateful to all of my colleagues and directors who have worked with me and put up with my nonsense for all these years.
I’ve so many memories working with the magazine when it used to be known as GameAxis Unwired Malaysia. I used to burn the midnight oil editing and writing articles when deadlines were looming. I have attended game preview events both near and far. Through GameAxis Malaysia, I’ve met so many people and become good friends with some of them. I’ve even gotten married to the love of my life, which would not have happened if I had not worked here at GameAxis Malaysia.
GameAxis Malaysia and GAX have also achieved so many milestones throughout the years. We had organized our own local home-grown gaming tournaments such as CELgames and GAX VERSUS, and we even once ran our own video game expo called GameAxis Live! back in 2008. We have given awards to the best local game distributors and online game publishers with GameAxis Survey Awards. Which other local game magazines can boast the same achievements?
So don’t be too sad about GAX and GameAxis Malaysia going away. We had a good long 9 years, which is a pretty impressive record for a local game magazine. I’m proud to have witness the changing of the local gaming landscape over the years, especially with the official release of game consoles such as the PlayStation 3 (and the upcoming PlayStation 4) in Malaysia, as well as the growing proliferation of original games. We are no longer just observers of the gaming industry; we are an active part of it.
Farewell my dear readers, and thank you.
