Overview: MARTIN BUBER (1878-1965) was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher and one of the paramount spiritual leaders of the twentieth century. He is best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a form of existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou relationship and the I-It relationship. Buber's appeal is vast—not only is he renowned for his translations of the Hebrew Bible but also for his interpretation of Hasidism, his role in Zionism, and his writings in psychotherapy and political philosophy.

The Letters of Martin Buber [Nahum Glatzer and Paul Mendes-Flohr, eds.] (Schocken, 2013)
This carefully edited selection of correspondence includes letters both to—and from—Buber from world-renowned scholars, thinkers, and philosophers. This edition contains the Preface to the German edition, as well as a Biographical Sketch by Grete Schaeder.

On Judaism (Schocken, 1996)
“The question I put before you, as well as before myself, is the question of the meaning of Judaism for the Jews. Why do we call ourselves Jews? I want to speak to you not of an abstraction but of your own life . . . its authenticity and essence.” With these words, Buber takes us on a journey into the heart of Judaism—its spirit, vision, and relevance to modern life.

Tales of the Hasidim [Omnibus Edition] (Schocken, 1991)
This edition brings together volumes one and two of Buber's classic work, with a new foreword by Chaim Potok. These marvelous tales—terse, vigorous, often cryptic—are the true texts of Hasidim. The hasidic masters, of whom these legends are told, are full-bodied personalities, yet their lives seem almost symbolic. Through them is expressed the intensity and holy joy whereby God becomes visible in everything.
