The Palace under the Alps by Bill Bryson
Requirements: PDF, 18.4 MB
Overview: The Palace Under the Alps, and Over 200 Other Unusual, Unspoiled, and Infrequently Visited Spots in 16 European Countries
This is a book for people who want more from a trip to Europe than just to see the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, the Colosseum at Rome, and 25,000 Japanese tourists. Although no reasonable person would ever suggest that you skip these sights (well, you might give the Japanese tourists a miss), your trip will be infinitely more rewarding if you can occasionally slip off from the throngs and strike out on your own. The following pages describe some 200 sights that most travelers never see - little-known museums, unspoiled towns and villages, out-of-the-way resorts, and unusual attractions - where one can experience European life firsthand rather than from the back of a crowd. Although a few are fairly remote - like the northernmost golf course in the world at Boden, Sweden, and the Aran Islands in Ireland - most like slightly off the main tourist routes. This book offers options and brief detours, rewarding places to explore in addition to, rather than instead of, the main tourist centers.
Obviously you can’t expect to have many of these places entirely to yourself. Europe is, after all, a densely populated continent whose residents are enthusiastic travelers. I don’t suppose you’ll ever have to fight your way through crowds to see the German National Bread Museum at Ulm or the Swedish Match Museum at Jönköping. But if you head for a coastal resort in July or August - however obscure it may appear on the map, however formidable it may be to get to - you will find crowds.
The simplest way to avoid this is to visit out of season. I’m amazed that so few people do this. Unless you are absolutely determined to return home with a deep Mediterranean suntan, my advice is to travel in spring or early summer or fall. Even in the depths of winter most of Europe enjoys a gratifyingly temperate climate (and in Britain, I can tell you from painful experience, there’s often little to choose between February and August). Off season you’ll find the prices cheaper, the people more hospitable, and the hoteliers, restaurateurs, and museum keepers almost lonely for your company.
