Her truly absorbing new book is simultaneously the story of a journey into the past and a search into the future. It describes most vividly her travels in many parts of Asia, from Hong Kong to the Himalayas, and at the same time it follows her quest for spiritual fulfilment.

But she is conscious that there is more than that to it: that she is also at the start of a voyage of discovery, a voyage into herself.
· · · As she struggles to find her bearings in the unfamiliar new city of great modern blocks, she recreates for us the Hong Kong of her childhood, the old streets of stalls – and especially the magical shop of her friend, the herbalist. She searches for him again now, but in vain; until at last she finds him, quite by chance and in the strangest circumstances, in the wild solitude of the almost unpopulated island of Lantao, where he is living as a hermit. Here she takes over a nearby hut, and begins to discover the contentment of living within herself. But the wise old man makes her face the fact that his way is not her Way, and sets her off on the deeper quest that leads ultimately to the Himalayas.
