A Spy on the Bus by Margean Gladysz
Requirements: ePUB reader | 454 KB
Overview: Memoir of a Company Rat
An adventuresome eighteen-year-old college grad with fresh eyes hires on with the Greyhound Bus line in 1946 and becomes a company spy. The match is perfect as Margean Worst leaves the farm for a life on the road, inspecting bus drivers on the routes, first in the Great Lakes region and then all over the country. Margean poses as a passenger and notes drivers' honesty, road conditions and equipment handling, sending reports back to headquarters. She also writes to her parents almost every day.
This young woman also notes everything around her -- the price of hotel rooms and meals, the quality of crops and livestock, and the attitudes of local people, with an occasional movie review thrown in. Through Margean's eyes we see 1946 through 1949 America when there was no TV, an overnight room at the Y was 75 cents and 80% of the roads in the country were unpaved.
