No Greater Love by Eris Field
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 222 kB
Overview: When Dutch psychiatrist Pieter comes to Buffalo for evaluation at the Cancer Institute, he visits Carl, an old friend, who had been sent from German-occupied Leiden to relatives in the US in 1939 by his Dutch-Jewish father. Now 78 and disabled, Carl yearns to go back, to avenge his family’s death by reclaiming his father’s property. While buying Carl’s favorite Dutch gin, Pieter encounters a Circassian beauty—Janan. Orphaned by an earthquake in Eastern Turkey and adopted by Carl’s cousins, she is infuriated when Pieter buys the last bottle of Old Dutch Jenever—the gin that she had promised to get for Carl. Arriving at Carl’s home as Janan attacks the snow-clogged walk, Pieter accepts her order to help. He collapses trying and she begins CPR. Pieter comes to as her lips are inches from his and knows he has found his love. Learning that he has late-onset leukemia, he thanks Janan for her help and asks how he may repay her. Knowing that Pieter will be gone in the morning, Janan, who feels that love has passed her by while she cared for her parents and Carl, says, “Give me the night.” Even after she loses income and health insurance when pregnancy complications force her to stop working, Janan refuses to name the father. It is Carl who offers a solution--marriage. He will help her save her babies and she will take him home, to Leiden. Desolate after repeated treatment failures, Pieter buries himself in working with refugee children waiting in Dutch centers for asylum, and Janan fulfills her bargain to take Carl home. Pieter and Janan, heart-broken over losing their chance at love, devote their lives to helping others. Against all odds, will life give them a second chance at love?
