Veronica Baker always knew growing up that she wanted to be a scientist just like her daddy. She worked hard to graduate at the top of her class, and was thrilled the day she started work at her father’s lab. When her father leaves on a trip to visit prospective investors, she assumes it will be business as usual, but when she stops hearing from him, Veronica assumes the worst and catches the first flight she can to try and track him down. When Ryker Evans learns that he’s shipping out to Lebanon to complete a solo mission, he’s not pleased. His last mission in Lebanon didn’t end so well, and he’s not eager to head back, but as the SEAL with the best track record in the navy when it comes to search and rescue, his CO doesn’t give him a choice. When he finds out that he’s being sent to extract an American woman who believes her father has been kidnapped, he’s even less pleased. He can’t stand civilians who want to be heroes, and his plan is to pull her out and get home, quickly and quietly. When the two meet, Veronica confirms all of Ryker’s worst fears. She’s insanely gorgeous, but she’s also stubborn, and she refuses to leave the country without her father. And Veronica can’t stand the arrogant and dismissive SEAL who refuses to listen to a word she says, no matter how beautiful the man is, or how much he lights her body on fire. As passion brews between them, Ryker grudgingly agrees to help her find the men who took her father, but when Veronica disappears as well, he’ll have to put it all on the line to save the woman he let slip away.

After getting Veronica back, Ryker blames himself for allowing her to be kidnapped and is determined to make it up to her. Working together to find her father, their chemistry explodes, and as much as Ryker wants to glory in it, he won’t allow his feelings to jeopardize Veronica, or her father’s safety. As their situation deteriorates, Ryker discovers a link to her father through a ghost from his past, and as Ryker’s history collides with his present, his objective is to keep Veronica safe and track down the men who have her father. Veronica can’t explain the change of heart in Ryker, but suddenly he’s more determined than ever to find her father’s kidnappers and hell bent on protecting her while he does it. As they run into dead-end after dead-end, Veronica starts to fall for Ryker, but they’re both keeping secrets that threaten their entire mission. As the pieces of the puzzle begin to fit together, the truth comes out and everything will change, including the feelings that they can’t continue to deny, but both refuse to acknowledge. As they race to find the men who have her father, Veronica and Ryker will both have to risk it all to complete their mission and get home safe. But, if they’re not careful, they could lose it all before they even get started.

On the plus side, Veronica’s father is safe. But the men who took him have stolen his project – a genetically engineered virus that can be weaponized and spread through a population like the common cold. Ryker just wants to be done with the mission and on a plane back home, but now he’s been ordered to retrieve the stolen material and not to return until it’s done. To make is life more difficult, Veronica is determined to help him get it back, and as much as he doesn’t want to admit it, he may actually need her. Veronica knows that there’s nothing Ryker would love more than to stick her on a plane towards home and safety. But, he can’t deny that she’ll be useful, so he’s resentfully agreed to hold off on sending her home. Now, it will take the two of them, and a handful of Ryker’s eclectic SEAL team to retrieve a deadly weapon out of the hands of the hands of a terrorist group that has haunted Ryker for years. As lives are threatened and the stakes are raised, it will take teamwork to complete the mission and give Ryker the justice he’s hunted for years. And, as they get closer to the end of their time together, Veronica and Ryker will have to decide, once and for all, what they are willing to live without. They’ll both have to admit their feelings, or risk losing each other forever.
