When news spreads around England that King William is dead, and Victoria is now the Queen of the United Kingdom, all feel the weight of great change to occur, and both aunt and uncle feel as if this would be the perfect opportunity to have one of their nieces apply for being one of the queen's ladies-in-waiting. Due to her being the oldest in the family, as well as being the wittiest and most sensible of her sisters, they choose to send Elizabeth to town to recommend herself to the new Queen.
When she goes, Elizabeth feels as if she is on the verge of making a good first impression, when a member of Parliament, who is a part of the Whig party, Mr. Darcy, impedes her progress. Due to their political difference, he ruins her chances of becoming a lady in waiting, but in spending time together in society, Mr. Darcy grows to be impressed with her mind as well as with her sharp words. Elizabeth, not caring for him, only does her best to gather a further acquaintance with Queen Victoria, who she finds to be under the wrong sort of influence and is impeding her progress with ruling over the English people. Will their differences continue to thwart a peace between them? Or will Darcy and her come to an understanding, helping Elizabeth reach the young Queen and help her rise from the wrong influences? And will Darcy and Elizabeth have to play matchmaker to the queen and her affectionate suitor?
