"'Fifty gold and I’m your man,' Dante said. He replied with a half-grin as Bahrys started before Dante stood up and lit up a cigarette as he got to the doorway before he paused, leaning against the entrance. 'I’ll be waiting here when you’re ready.'
“Bahrys and Ari looked at each other, without saying anything. They didn’t have to say much. Was this stranger a rouge? Yes. Was he of questionable intent? Yes. Was he a scoundrel? Most definitely. But the road to Varros is long and treacherous, and having never made the journey before she would definitely need a guide, not to mention all the help she could get. And if his loyalty was only to money and himself, well, at least she knew where she stood, and she had the money."
Along their journey, even to the nearest city, Ari finds that life outside the safety of city walls proves to be a bit more dangerous than before. However, when they reached the distant, neighboring city of Varros, Ari finds that things inside the safety of the Myrin's city walls can be tougher than they seemed.
