Yet a life away from them is far from easy, and Elodie is close to giving up, until she walks into a coffee shop in Portland, Oregon, and finds a way to stay hidden, even if she has to pretend all over again to be someone she isn’t.
Harlan Jacobs is just turning thirty-four, and while he’s a successful novelist with two-dozen published books under his belt, he’s entered a long dry spell of writer’s block. He attributes this to his broken family, a cheating ex-wife and a son that he’s all but lost. He’d moved across the country, to the Oregon Coast, to start fresh and jumpstart his career, but there remain voids in his life that make this nearly impossible. And yet, when a young woman suddenly appears next door, she reignites a spark in him that had long ago gone out. She’s kind and beautiful and a little bit mysterious, and when he finally allows himself to truly fall for her, he can’t begin to imagine everything she’s hiding from him.
The past and present must eventually collide, and when they do, one of them will be fighting for their very life.
2. Body Politic - Michael Hughes had it all, a beautiful wife, good looks, a promising political career and family money to help fund his dreams. But when he was spotted and photographed out with his ex-girlfriend, the New York City tabloids eagerly cast him as a cheating husband. True or not, he failed to defend himself, so at thirty-two, he finds himself divorced, fighting for his political future, and caught up in less than savory late night activities to try to purge his personal demons. The last thing he wants is another relationship, but when his older brother and sister-in-law hire a young woman named Jennifer to help out with their two boys, Michael’s strong attraction to her forces him to rethink this stance.
At twenty-three, Jennifer Andino has finished college and has enough money saved to fund the next chapter in her life. But it’s hard to look toward the future when she can’t forget the parents and brother she lost in her past. She blames Walter Hughes for this, a man with political and economic power, whose greed destroyed her family, a man who hasn’t paid any price at all. She’d been powerless to seek retribution, until an opportunity presents itself to slip into the life of someone else, to bring her to the center of the Hughes household as a trusted nanny. Her existence has been structured toward success, money and fame, but she turns her back on it all to enroll in a high school a thousand miles north of Los Angeles, for a chance to be normal. It’s also to get away from the tight grip her mother has on her life, and to escape a powerful man that holds her deepest secret over her. The last person she expects to see teaching in her classroom is her ex-boyfriend’s older brother, Ethan Hughes. They’d had a moment earlier in the summer where she felt a bolt of lightening in seeing him again, but the electricity fizzled when Ethan shot her down. But now, it seems very likely that lightening will strike twice.
Ethan Hughes has always tried to follow the rules, to be a good son and brother, a credit to the Hughes name. It’s why, when he crossed paths with Valentina earlier in the summer, he tamped down the sudden, intense feelings he had for her. Not only had she broken his brother’s heart, but she was only eighteen and still in high school, while he’d turned twenty-three and was pursuing a master’s degree. And besides, Ethan’s guilt for a past mistake has him believing he’s unworthy of love and happiness. But when Valentina arrives in the class he’s helping to teach, it may be impossible to resist his feelings for her.
As Ethan and Valentina’s relationship progresses, they’ll have to confide their secrets in one another if they have any chance of defeating their external foes.
