I start out with nothing against Fiadora Brown or what she does for a living. Then I get a glimpse of the sexy Ice Queen and her bad attitude. She hates sports. Especially hockey. More specifically, she hates hockey players. She hates me (nobody hates me) and I’ve never even met the woman before.
This is going to be a tough two weeks.
Then the walls around her heart start to crumble and she gives me a taste of the softness underneath. A softness I
want to protect, I want to know, I want to love.
Except love wasn’t supposed to be part of the equation.
And Fia wants nothing to do with me. She’s too busy looking over her shoulder, running from her past.
There’s one thing I have to keep in mind at all times: I need to give her the best angle for her story on the Raiders and the Single Dad Hockey Players Club that I can, or the article she writes will ruin us all.
4. Second Shot - A ridiculous knee injury takes me out of the game for the rest of the NHL season. Do I cry? No, because I’m Seamus Byrne. I’m a beast on the ice and I’m not going to let a little knee problem slow me down.
Until my wife decides she wants a divorce. Talk about kicking a man while he’s down.
My silver lining through it all is my killer doc, Nicole Stewart.
Then I do something impulsive that puts her future in jeopardy. Now I’m the one who has to fight for her, and I can’t exactly say it’s a hardship. She’s stubborn and sweet and has a few secrets of her own. But I’m all kinds of wrong for her. I should stay away from her.
Too bad I’m starting to see how a great gal like Nicole could give a guy like me a second shot at true love.
5. Slip Shot - My best buddy from high school is marrying my ex and I’m the best man. Talk about awkward. The silver lining is I’m paired for the wedding with the groom's little sister Chloe. She’s always been adorable...also, off limits - because I’m the small-town bad boy, now an NHL star, and she’s the pastor’s daughter.
But weddings make people do crazy things and we end up doing each other. It’s our little secret and we’re never repeating it.
Except it’s hard to keep an accidental pregnancy secret for long- and when she shows up on my doorstep, I know I’ve messed up her whole life. Is it bad that I’m not upset about this baby?
As the only kid of a single mom, I’m going to do whatever Chloe and the baby need me to do, and if that means a fake relationship to keep her family happy, then I’m all in and my hockey family is on board to help me. If only the lines between fake and real weren’t so fucking blurry.
I never wanted a family but I’ve always wanted Chloe. Now I just have to convince her that this reformed bad boy is good enough for her and our child...
6. Snap Shot - There’s nothing wrong with a little sexy foreplay for your Vegas one-night stand, am I right? It only becomes a problem when you get home and realize your hook-up now has naked photos of you in your full glory (and I am glorious, don’t worry about that). Now I have no way to track her down.
Maybe she won’t sell the pictures to the press, even if I am a NHL hockey player and she stands to make a mint. There might still be good--and really, really smokin’ hot--people out there. I’m staking my career on a stranger’s moral compass.
That’s what I hope for, at least, until I discover that Smithy aka Morgan Smith is now moonlighting as a paparazzi. She needs the money to help her kid and I can’t tell if she’s playing me or if she's actually a decent woman who won’t resort to blackmail.
I don’t want to believe she’ll sell my pictures but she’s in a very, very tight spot. So am I: those pictures can ruin my career.
Is it wrong that I’m still madly attracted to the one woman who can destroy me?
I need a solution to this dilemma so we can both move on with our lives and go our separate ways. Because I am not the kind of guy who falls for anyone, least of all his one night stand. No matter how badly I want her.
8. Stolen Shot - I take a weekend in Vegas to blow off steam, and what happens? Somehow I end up married to a curvy brunette. It wouldn't be so bad if both she and her overbearing daddy didn't work for a rival NHL team. But they're Arizona Rattlesnakes, and I'm a Minnesota Raider through and through.
As a true romantic who always thinks the latest girl is the one, I agree to try and make it work, to salvage both of our reputations.
At least, I try.
And being with Cassidy is no hardship—in fact, everything about my brainy bride is a delight, though trying to work a long-distance relationship with a woman who doubts herself and my commitment to her isn't easy. Still, where love is concerned, I say, whatever it takes. Especially with her.
Just when I think we're making progress, my past comes back to haunt us. And although Cassidy may not be the first woman I've fallen for, I want her to be my last. It may take the biggest sacrifice ever to prove to her that this fake Vegas marriage is real. Go big or go home, right? All I know now...is that home is with Cassidy. Wherever she wants to be.
