3. Code or Consequences - Giovanni Arturo Gallo
I played by the rules forced upon me, refined the role expected of me, and honored my end of the deal. In return, she was to be mine. Without a doubt, the reward would have been well worth all my devoted years of service and sacrifice to the syndicate.
In the end, it wasn’t the enemies in the street that double-crossed me. It was an inside job. And that leaves me with only one question… Would you wage war amongst your blood for love?
Maybe you wouldn’t, but me, I welcomed it if that meant having her at my side.
They say we live and breathe by the code for la famiglia.
I am not the same.
I live and breathe for her.
My payback was never directed toward one; it was targeted at them all…
Crystallin Vittoria Rossetti
I knew the men within la famiglia to be brutal businessmen. After all, I grew up alongside them. But Giovanni Gallo was different, or that’s what I had convinced myself.
Sometimes you realize a little too late that they weren’t a sheep in wolf clothing at all, no. The clothes inevitably matched the soul. Giovanni was exactly who he had always been and always would be, a wolf in wolves’ attire. I just pretended not to notice. You see, that’s the thing about the heart, it will play tricks on the eyes.
Consequences are the result of betrayal. And with every choice we make, there is a price to be paid. And as far as Giovanni goes, he would pay dearly.
4. Lovely Lyrics, Lies, and Rhymes - Antonio Dante Costa
I never wanted to be affiliated with la famiglia. There was no morality in their approach or how they fought, brandishing smiles and a veil of friendship. The entire time, a bomb is silently ticking in the background, and casualties are inevitable.
Their way of life was better suited for men willing to conform to the code, like good little house pets. Besides, my family tree had proven disloyalty, leaving a permanent stain on the Costa name. They no more wanted me than I did them.
Regrettably, my actions led me to their doorstep. It was something that couldn’t be avoided. Looking back on it, I have no regrets. Si, I would do it again. A mostro knows its own kind, I suppose. Staying true to my devious form, I could be nothing more than what I truly was.
A guardian angel I was not. A predator protecting what was his, that was more like it. The alternative would have been too much to bear, though. What a miserable existence it would be living in a world without a Songbird.
Niveyia Rose Cirelli
Deception had a taste, like ash on the tongue. Fowl with a horrible flavor and bitter aftermath. Whereas deceit typically sullies and severs a relationship, our fabrication built an irrevocable bond.
To the outsider, Antonio wasn’t viewed as the hero, but he certainly was no villain to me. As a matter of fact, in every sense of the meaning, he was my savior. I wanted to tell everyone what he had done in my honor, but he made me promise to keep quiet. It became our shared secret as well as a lie.
Some say the truth will set you free, but I chose the lie that kept me anchored to him. Until the lies were directed at me.
Once dishonesty fell from his lips it distorted my reality. The lie took root inside my soul like a weed amongst carefully cultivated crops. While my love for him was as natural as breathing, it was also tainted by dishonesty.
