2. Dette Management - I was born of the first line of Vritra, a dragon from a noble drake and a high-born dette in my homelands of India. I was the only dette of my clutch, a treasure raised for political gain, as all my other dette siblings and half siblings were. My drake father’s line had a strong reputation for laying, especially with the help of his alchemist’s tonics grown from sacred flowers in their secret garden.
I am a dette, a treasure, a rarity and precious jewel in these days. A drake is to fawn over me and spoil me, or at least I was told as much. My father gave me to an American drake for a tract of land for my brother’s inheritance, to start the Vritra line there with my brother as head of this new world’s clan. The fates had other plans though, when my heats came and went, and I never produced a single egg for my drake. For forty years, I wilted under my drake’s hand until the truth came to me in the form of five beautiful drakes that swear that I am their prince, bartered with their stolen treasure.
I really want to be their prince, but in my life I’ve not born a single egg, and I want so much to give them pups, to bear that banner of pride, but I don’t know if they’ll be okay without pups, with a defective dette as myself. If I cannot give them pups, then I must be the best prince they could ever ask for.
3. Settling His Dette - Twenty-five years ago I looked my doctor in the eye while he told me the worst news of my life. My final chance to prove that I could be a bearer for my drake was over, and I would be repudiated... marked barren. My drake said it himself, he'd turn me out and find another dette, so I made that choice for him and I ran away bearing two small blank eggs that I laid in suffering silence. For but a moment I hoped they'd be viably sized, but no.
Having no other choice, I abandoned them and hid myself away in the mountains, joining the wild dragons.
Still even now, all these years later, I have dreams about the only drake I found worthy. Even my dragon refuses to mate any other. Springtime comes and a scent of cinnamon catches me on the breeze, my fire-headed lover. "Sacha!" I want him so much, but I don't deserve him. He comes to me with nestblossoms and sweet words, taking me and the wild pups I've fostered into his forgiving arms and he tells me the saddest and most wonderful news. In his hands is a strange new device, something I've not seen before, a tiny computer, and it's filled with pictures of a small dette. "Leo," he tells me.
Will I get my second chance? Will my pup understand why I abandoned him? Can I forgive myself?
