They put her into a softer dress than she’s ever worn, feed her a meal she could never afford otherwise, and tell her what an honor it is to have been selected. Then she’s placed in the shaft that will take her to her fate.
Only, once she’s in total darkness, hundreds of feet below the only home she’s ever known, there’s a deep voice calling her forward. Demanding she kneel before him. Promising her both pleasure and pain.
She no longer knows if this is her end, or the beginning of something else.
2. Fleeing from the Monster - They drafted my sister to be sacrificed to the monster last autumn. I never in a million years expect my name to be drawn this time. But once I see Keri Palmer flashing on the TV screen, I know I only have two options. Accept my fate of being fed to a monster, leaving my younger sister, Leah, all alone, or run and try to escape with her. I choose the latter.
Now, I have the government hunting me down, desperate to catch me in time to lower me into the ground at midnight. If they don’t send down a sacrifice, the monster will rise to kill us all, or so we’ve always been told. Only the rumors have been spreading, about sexy monsters who want women for more than just a meal. News outlets have shown drawings of them that make forbidden thoughts run through my mind.
I’m determined not to find out which of the rumors are actually true. I refuse to meet the same end my older sister did. Either I make it into another quadrant, or I’ll give that monster hell when they lower me down to him.
One way or another, I won’t lose.
5. A Deal with the Monster - This year's draft will change everything.
No one knows what becomes of the sacrifices sent down to the monster below each year. If they're eaten, brutally murdered, or kept in some type of harem. But Nicole has never had to worry about any of those horrors happening to her, because her father has always used his wealth and power to ensure her name won't ever be selected. Neither will save her this year, though.
She's paraded in front of cameras before being fed and pampered, all while still in disbelief of what the night holds. Disbelief flees when she's lowered into the darkness and sent down to her fate.
She doesn't know this draft is unlike any other. Or who and what awaits her below.
Her father always told her there's a deal to be made. But the longer the monster's violet eyes watch her in the dark, Nicole begins to wonder if she wants to negotiate for her life or for him to act on the desire she feels between them.
