Arnold Chadwick is lounging over his coffee and cigarette at Kringle's bakery and lunchroom on Delancey Street, enjoying the beautiful April morning on his wedding day. He feels omnipotent, and everything around him seems fantastic and picturesque. He decides to buy a wedding ring from Abraham Lesser's jewelry store, four blocks away. Meanwhile, his bride-to-be, Margaret Lyons, is packing her suitcase, humming and talking to her canary. She is excited about their future together. However, when a tall, well-dressed man with iron-gray hair comes to her room and asks her to come with him, saying that something serious has happened to Arnold, her life takes a dramatic turn. She accompanies the man and her suitcase to find out what has happened to Arnold.
