Called upon to attend and testify at Mustafa Kareef's trial in Senegal, and upon learning of the killing of her friends and colleagues in Africa, Talya Gilmore falls in the throes of depression. Samir Mandalay, the company pilot, saves Talya from a suicide attempt, brings her home, and leaves her in the care of Dr. Ghali Defray. The next morning Talya goes missing. Samir and Ghali find her in Victoria where Samir persuades Talya to let him keep her company. They arrive in Paris only for Talya to discover that Samir is keeping an apartment at the Hotel de Crillon on the Place de la Concorde. Left alone in Samir's apartment she is induced into meeting a drug lord by the name of Charos. During the meeting, Charos persuades Talya in veiled instructions to pursue her investigation into the drug operation that Kareef had initiated in Senegal and Mali. The investigation leads Samir and Talya through the Sahara in a seemingly endless search for the truth behind the killings and the drug trafficking. At the end of their journey Talya goes back to where her childhood nightmare began.
