Korval's Game, a Liaden Universe omnibus by Sharon Lee, Steve Miller
Requirements: ePUB reader, 780 Kb
Overview: The Liaden universe is the backdrop to a series that spans thousands of years and more than one universe.* As of 2015, the series comprises 18 novels and at least 21 chapbooks; and the authors have been contracted for a further five novels.

Set sometime in the future, the series occasionally references a planet named Terra - and as not being the first planet to bear that name. However, the familiar names and cultural references in the core books, coupled with a lack of them in the "Crystal" books, suggest it is Earth.

In the wake of a diaspora from a "decrystallizing" galaxy that was humankind's prior home, humanity has divided into three major sub-races: Terran, Liaden and Yxtrang. Numerous isolated colony planets also exist in this Universe, which have backslid technologically and are held as protectorates until their civilizations advance enough to cope with extraplanetary contact.

The series is notable for having almost failed to take flight. The authors had written the first three books—Agent of Change, Conflict of Honors, Carpe Diem—but were told that sales were not sufficient to justify continuing. Unbeknownst to them the books had caused such a stir on the Usenet group rec.arts.sf.written that they were added to the group's FAQ. Once the authors had gained Internet access, they were surprised to find so many people looking for the next book, and even more surprised that its title was already decided: "Plan B". They published some chapbooks to stave off the hungry fans and started writing... Plan B. A further three books followed in due course to complete the "Agent of Change" sequence. The rest is science fiction history.

Plan B
Val Con yos’Phelium is a fugitive. The heir of Clan Korval is wanted by the covert Liaden agency known as the Department of the Interior, whose rulers have declared unofficial war against the entire clan. With only his love, Miri Robertson, by his side, Val Con plans a desperate gamble by forming an alliance with Clan Erob on the planet where Miri was born.

But Val Con’s cousin, Shan yos’Galan, can’t wait for help that may never arrive. With enemy agents closing in, he invokes Plan B—setting in motion a series of events that will have dire consequences, not only for him and his life-mate, Priscilla Mendoza, but all of Liad.

I Dare
On the run from the agents of the Department of the Interior, Val Con has been separated from Miri. Shan, Val Con’s cousin, and Shan’s life-mate Priscilla, continue to search for him, believing that he’s the Clan’s last hope for survival.

But the DOI is attacking Clan Korval in a more subtle fashion. Pat Rin yos’Phelium—Val’s ne’er-do-well, nearly identical cousin, gambler and shooter—is offered control of the clan. The DOI believes they can manipulate him into serving their agenda.

They’re wrong...

* This makes placing the various titles in any consistent order challenging. I suggest you visit Sharon Lee's website (sharonleewriter.com). She includes several lists and has some suggestions for reading order.
