Canopus in Argos: Archives series by Doris Lessing
Requirements: ePub and Mobi Readers, 5.4 MB
Overview: "Shikasta was started in the belief that it would be a single self-contained book, and that when it was finished I would be done with the subject. But as I wrote I was invaded with ideas for other books, other stories, and the exhilaration that comes from being set free into a large scope, with more capacious possibilities and themes. It was clear I had made – or found – a new world for myself, a realm where the petty fates of planets, let alone individuals, are only aspects of cosmic evolution expressed in the rivalries and interactions of great galactic Empires: Canopus, Sirius, and their enemy, the Empire Puttiora, with its criminal planet Shammat. I feel as if I have been set free both to be as experimental as I like, and as traditional: the next volumes in this series have turned out to be a fable, or myth. Also, oddly enough, to be more realistic." —Doris Lessing (1919 - 2013)
Genre: Fiction > Science Fiction

Book01 - Re- Colonised Planet 5- Shikasta: Presented as a compilation of documents, reports, letters, speeches and journal entries, this purports to be a general study of the planet Shikasta, clearly the planet Earth, to be used by history students of the higher planet Canopus and to be stored in the Canopian archives. For eons, galactic empires have struggled against one another, and Shikasta is one of the main battlegrounds.
Book02 - The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four, and Five: The book chronicles the tumultous relationship between regents of two incompatible zones who are forced together by the will of "Providers" for the good of the survival of the planet. The couple are thrown together and then torn apart and then thrown together again and again tragically torn apart again for that is how it has been ordained by the higher beings.
Book03 - The Sirian Experiments: The Sirian Experiments take up what book 1 began. While Marriages left the macro interplanetary / -cultural level, we are now back to an eagle's perspective. Only this time, we see the universe not from the all-knowing Canopian view but from the more biased Sirian view which as a matter of fact is akin to a human view with its susceptibility to errors, lies, politics and trends.
Book04 - The Making of the Representative for Planet 8: Planet 8 is entering an ice age, making survival of any species impossible. Canopus knows this and prepares to save the relevant traits of its inhabitants in selected representatives for Planet 8.
Book05 - The Sentimental Agents in the Volyen Empire: Because of its focus on characterization & social/cultural issues, & no emphasis on technological details, this book is soft sf, or "space fiction" as Lessing calls her Canopus in Argos series. While The Sentimental Agents can be read as a stand-alone book, she does continue with the history of the Sirian Empire, picking up from where she left off in The Sirian Experiments.
