Be Thou My Vision by Cori Elizabeth (The Population Series #1)
Requirements: epub reader, 249 kB
Overview: In the enclosed, white-walled city where Io Mira lives, citizens who are not part of the ruling class of Governors are given a choice: be blinded by the government in exchange for having your every physical need met for the rest of your life, or keep your sight, but serve those who haven’t and struggle to get by.
Become a Plenty and lose your vision, or become an Optic and lose your freedom.
Always something of a rebel, from the day she’s old enough to understand the sacrifice that Plentitude requires, Io knows the decision she will make. Regardless of what the Governors insist, to serve others is a luxury compared to the thought of eternal darkness. But the moment she declares to the Governors her choice, Io is swept away into darkness only to wake up and find that a chip has been inserted into her brain, connecting her eyes to those of Ruth, an elderly woman and one of the two Plenties Io will serve. It is a system of vicarious sight, to restore some fragment of Ruth’s sacrificed vision.
But Ruth, not one to comply with the Governors’ will, has another plan entirely. Through an unspoken accord with Io, Ruth promises never to take control of Io’s eyes in exchange for Io’s protection from the Governors of the other Plenty she is bound to serve, a little boy named James. For six years, they grow to become a family, the bonds between them overcoming the Governors’ totalitarian intentions, until changing circumstances in the city around them threaten the haven of love they've come to rely upon to survive. Plummeting rations, earlier curfews and increasingly hostile guards put the citizens on edge, and Io finds that her subversive endeavors, once lightheartedly mischievous, are beginning to stoke the anger of those in power.
When on the spur of the moment Io takes in an injured stranger from nowhere within the city, a half-blind young man named Daniel who has lost his memory, her world begins to crack at the edges, threatening at every moment to shatter entirely. As the Governors grow stronger and the citizens weaker, Io must fight harder every day to cling to the people she loves, and just when everything is teetering on the edge, Daniel teaches Io that the only way she can save her world might just be to lose it.
